What does error code B1503 mean?
Error code B1503 indicates a specific electrical fault in the right turn signal circuit, detected by the airbag control unit (SRS module). Although the turn signal is not directly part of the airbag system, modern SRS systems monitor peripheral circuits to ensure the integrity of the entire vehicle electrical network.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit registers an implausible voltage or an incorrect resistance value in the right turn signal circuit. This can be caused by an open circuit or a short circuit.
Once this fault is detected, the control unit preemptively illuminates the airbag warning light, as a malfunction in the vehicle’s electrical system could potentially affect safety‑critical systems as well. Therefore, this error does not indicate a defect in the airbag itself but rather a problem within the monitored turn signal system.
How do you recognize error B1503?
The primary symptom for the driver is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the right turn signal may malfunction, and error code B1503 will be stored in the airbag control unit’s diagnostic memory and can be read out.
The airbag warning light illuminates after starting the vehicle and does not go off, clearly indicating that the SRS system has detected a fault and is in diagnostic mode.
At the same time, the functionality of the right turn signal may be impaired. Possible signs include complete failure, an increased blink rate (rapid flashing), or continuous illumination, depending on the nature of the electrical fault.
During diagnosis with an appropriate workshop tester, error code B1503 appears as an active or stored fault in the airbag control unit’s memory, often accompanied by wording such as “fault in the right turn signal circuit” or similar phrasing.
What causes B1503?
The causes of error code B1503 almost always stem from issues in the external wiring or components of the turn signal circuit. These include defective bulbs, corroded connectors, broken wires, or short circuits in the wiring harness.
A very common cause is a faulty bulb or a defective LED in the right turn signal. The altered resistance in the circuit is immediately recognized as a fault by the control unit.
Corrosion at the turn signal connectors or in the associated wiring harness is also a typical source of problems. Moisture and dirt lead to poor contacts and abnormal electrical readings.
Rarer but possible are interruptions in the circuit due to wire breaks or short circuits to ground or positive in the wiring leading to the turn signal. Such damage often results from mechanical stress or aging.
In some cases, accompanying error codes such as B1123 (general fault in the airbag control unit) or U300042 (memory error in the instrument cluster) may appear in the diagnostic log, pointing to a more extensive electrical issue.

This error code is not limited to a single make but occurs more frequently in certain vehicles. In particular, error code B1503 has been documented and is well known in connection with the Hyundai Azera IG.
