What does error code B1571 mean?
Error code B1571 indicates a specific circuit fault originating from the left rear door. The airbag control unit registers this error when it detects faulty communication or a persistently open signal from the door contact switch, suggesting an interruption in the corresponding signal path.
The airbag control unit is the central component of the passive safety system, continuously monitoring all connected sensors and actuators. It processes signals from impact sensors, seatbelt pretensioners, and components such as door contact switches to activate the appropriate restraint systems in the event of a crash.
If the control unit detects an implausible input or an interruption—such as with error B1571—it stores the fault in its memory. At the same time, the airbag warning light on the instrument panel illuminates to alert the driver to the system malfunction.
How can you recognize error B1571?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1571 is the persistent illumination of the airbag warning light. This warning indicates an active fault in the safety system and remains lit until the underlying issue is resolved and the fault memory is cleared using a diagnostic tool.
Upon turning on the ignition, the airbag system performs a self-diagnosis. If the fault persists, the warning light stays on, signaling that the system is no longer fully functional.
Other functional impairments during driving typically do not occur. However, this fault is safety‑relevant because the proper functioning of the airbag system can no longer be guaranteed.
What causes B1571?
The causes of B1571 almost always stem from the periphery of the left rear door. Common issues include a defective door contact switch, damaged wiring, or poor connector contacts. In three-door vehicles, connectors beneath the front seats are often affected by their movement.
The most frequent cause is a faulty or damaged door contact switch itself. Wear, corrosion, or mechanical stress can lead to a permanently open signal, which the control unit interprets as a fault.
Another typical source of errors is damaged cables or poor connector contacts. A broken wire in the harness leading to the door, or a corroded connector, interrupts the electrical circuit and triggers the error code.
In particular, in three-door vehicles, the constant forward-and-backward motion of the front seats can place significant mechanical stress on the airbag connector connections underneath. This often results in loose contacts or cable breaks, which may also cause error B1571.
