What does error code B1574 mean?
Error code B1574 indicates a short circuit in the circuit of the left rear door contact switch (LR). The airbag control unit (SRS ECU) detects this fault because it monitors the status of the doors to correctly adjust the deployment strategy for airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash. Such a fault results in the deactivation of safety functions.
The OBD-II diagnostic code B1574 is technically described as “Door Ajar LR (Left Rear): Circuit Short to Ground / Parking Lamp.” This means that the electrical wiring connecting the left rear door’s status to the airbag control unit has an unintended connection to ground or positive voltage.
The SRS system requires this information to ensure that the doors are closed and that safety functions can be properly controlled. A faulty door contact can compromise the entire restraint system’s operation and prevent proper deployment in an emergency.
How do you recognize error B1574?
The primary symptom of error B1574 is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light (SRS warning lamp) on the instrument cluster. This is a clear indication that the airbag system has detected a malfunction and may no longer function properly, significantly compromising occupant safety.
After starting the vehicle, the SRS warning light does not extinguish as usual but remains lit. This signals that a safety‑related fault is stored in the system and requires immediate inspection.
As a result of this fault, the airbag control unit may enter a safety mode, disabling the entire system or parts of it. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners would then fail to deploy as intended.
What causes B1574?
The most common cause of error code B1574 is hardware failure. This includes a defective door contact switch on the left rear door—often due to moisture or mechanical wear—a broken cable in the flexible section near the door hinges, or a short circuit caused by damaged cable insulation.
The door contact switch itself is a typical source of failure. Penetrating moisture can lead to corrosion, while repeated mechanical actuation over time may eventually cause the switch to fail.
Another widespread cause is a break in the wiring harness running from the vehicle body into the door. Frequent opening and closing of the door puts stress on the cable material, which can eventually lead to breaks.
Improper repairs or damaged insulation elsewhere in the circuit can also create a short to ground or positive voltage, which the airbag control unit interprets as error B1574.
