What does error code B1577 mean?
Error code B1577 indicates a critical electrical fault in the airbag control unit. Specifically, it points to a short circuit to battery voltage in the input circuit of the airbag warning light. This means that the activation of the warning lamp on the instrument cluster is disrupted, compromising the overall safety and functionality of the airbag system.
Technically speaking, there is a faulty electrical connection to the positive battery voltage in the “lamp park input circuit.” This circuit is responsible for reporting the status of the airbag warning light to the control unit. Due to the short circuit, the control unit receives continuous or incorrect signals, can no longer monitor the system’s condition accurately, and therefore enters a fault mode.
As a result, the airbag warning light remains permanently illuminated to alert the driver. The control unit can no longer reliably perform its monitoring functions for the sensors and airbags, meaning the protective function in the event of an accident is no longer guaranteed.
How do you recognize error B1577?
The main symptom of error B1577 is a continuously lit or flashing airbag warning light on the dashboard. In some cases, communication between a diagnostic tool and the airbag control unit may also become impossible, as the internal fault blocks diagnostic functions.
The most obvious sign is the activation of the airbag warning light, which fails to turn off after the vehicle is started. This signal indicates that the self-diagnostic system of the airbag control unit has detected a serious fault and the system has been deactivated.
Another possible symptom is communication issues during vehicle diagnostics. If a workshop attempts to read the fault memory, the control unit may become unresponsive due to the internal short circuit. This complicates initial diagnosis but clearly points to a defect in the control unit or its peripherals.
Ultimately, the fault leads to a general malfunction of the airbag system. There is a risk that the airbags may fail to deploy or deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash.
What causes B1577?
The primary cause of error code B1577 is physical damage to the electrical wiring. This includes cable breaks, damaged insulation, or corroded connectors in the airbag warning light circuit. The fault can also be triggered by an internal hardware defect directly on the control unit’s circuit board.
First and foremost are damages to the wiring harness connecting the control unit to the instrument cluster. Friction points, breaks, or insulation that has become porous with age can create direct contact with a live wire, leading to the short circuit.
Loose or corroded connectors are another common source of failure. Moisture or vibrations can cause oxidation at the contact pins, forming unwanted electrical bridges and triggering the short circuit in the lamp park input circuit.
Rarer but still possible is a defect directly within the airbag control unit itself. A blown SMD component or a hairline crack on the circuit board can produce the same B1577 error code. This is an internal hardware issue requiring component-level repair.

Error code B1577 occurs across various brands but is particularly well-known in certain models from Alfa Romeo and Mitsubishi. These include, among others, the Alfa Romeo 90, as well as the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and Pajero iO. Repair is available for these and many other vehicles.
