What does error code B1579 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1579 points to a specific hardware issue within the airbag system. Primarily, it signals a malfunction in the passenger-side airbag deactivation switch or a defect in the control unit’s main chip itself. The system can no longer verify the switch’s functionality, which poses a safety risk.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit continuously monitors the circuit of the manual deactivation switch. When error B1579 occurs, it means that the measured electrical values fall outside the manufacturer-defined tolerance range. Alternatively, the fault may also be triggered by an internal defect in the main processor on the circuit board.
This error code is clearly classified as a hardware failure. It does not indicate a software problem or incorrect coding but rather a physical disruption of a component or its associated electrical connections.
How do you recognize error B1579?
The primary symptom of error code B1579 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, an error message may appear on the vehicle’s display. Typically, the manual deactivation of the passenger-side airbag no longer functions, or its status is displayed incorrectly.
The most obvious sign is the active airbag warning light. It fails to turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating a safety-critical fault in the restraint system. In the event of a crash, the proper functioning of the airbags can no longer be guaranteed.
Another clear indication is the malfunctioning of the deactivation switch itself. The status indicator showing whether the passenger-side airbag is deactivated (often labeled “Passenger Airbag OFF”) may behave erratically—remaining unlit or displaying an incorrect state.
When diagnosing with a suitable OBD2 tool, such as SDPROG, error code B1579 can be clearly read from the airbag control unit’s fault memory. Clearing the error is usually not permanent, as the underlying hardware cause persists.
What causes error code B1579?
The most common causes of B1579 are defects in the manual airbag deactivation switch itself or an internal fault in the control unit’s main chip. Other reasons include damaged cables, corroded connectors, or water damage to the control unit or wiring harness, leading to short circuits or interruptions.
First and foremost are defects in the manual deactivation switch or an internal hardware failure in the airbag control unit’s main processor. These components are subject to electronic wear or can be damaged by voltage spikes.
A further widespread cause involves peripheral issues, including faulty cables, poor or corroded connectors, and damaged wiring harnesses. Especially in three-door vehicles, frequent seat adjustments can loosen the airbag connectors beneath the seats, resulting in contact problems.
Environmental factors, such as ingress of moisture, are also typical sources of failure. Water or oil inside the control unit leads to corrosion on the circuit board, damages conductive traces, and can trigger short circuits that activate error B1579.
