What does error code B16 on the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code B16 identifies a specific fault in the airbag control unit with part number B16. The cause typically lies in the device’s internal electronics, such as short circuits, defective components, or damage from water ingress, which can trigger a malfunction of the entire safety system.
This error code is set by the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis when a critical hardware failure is detected. Unlike general communication errors, B16 directly points to an issue on the control board or in the immediate peripheral connections.
The result is that the airbag system switches to a safety mode and the airbags are deactivated. The airbag warning light remains steadily illuminated to alert the driver to the fault and signal the need for immediate inspection.
How do you recognize error code B16?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B16 is the permanently lit airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating a serious malfunction and deactivation of the airbag system.
In most cases, the airbag warning light stays on continuously. Occasional flashing is uncommon with this error code, as it usually signals a persistent hardware defect.
There are no other direct symptoms during normal driving; however, the vehicle’s passive safety is severely compromised. In the event of a crash, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners may fail to deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
What causes error code B16?
The main causes of error code B16 are electronic faults directly within the airbag control unit, such as moisture-induced short circuits, damaged solder joints, or faulty sensor connectors. Problems in external wiring—like corroded connectors or broken cables—can also trigger this error.
A common source of trouble is mechanical stress on the wiring. Connector assemblies under the seats, in particular, can be damaged by seat adjustments. Likewise, the steering wheel coil spring is a component that wears out due to constant rotational movements, potentially causing contact issues.
Corrosion and water ingress are additional critical factors. When moisture enters the control unit, it can lead to leakage currents and short circuits on the circuit board, triggering error code B16. A thorough visual inspection of connectors and the housing is therefore essential.
Following a collision, the control unit may also store fault codes, especially so‑called crash data. Even if error code B16 originally had another cause, stored crash data often prevents reactivation of the system after repair. Erasing this data is thus a key step in the repair process.
Which models exhibit error code B16?
Error code B16 is specific to airbag control units with part number B16. These are primarily installed in newer Ford commercial vehicles, notably the fourth-generation Ford Ranger from model year 2022 onward, as well as the Ford Transit Mk4.

How is error code B16 professionally repaired?
Professional repair of error code B16 begins with precise diagnostics to pinpoint the exact cause on the circuit board. Defective electronic components are then repaired or replaced, solder joints are renewed, and any stored crash data is erased. A final functional test ensures full operability.

Inside the lab, the actual electronic repair takes place. Using specialized measurement equipment, short circuits, cold solder joints, or defective components on the circuit board are identified and expertly fixed. An essential step is resetting the fault memory, particularly erasing crash data, to enable the control unit to be reactivated.
Following successful repair and a comprehensive test, the control unit is returned. It can generally be reinstalled without further programming. The airbag warning light should extinguish after installation and ignition. A 12-month warranty is provided for the repair.
