What does B1605 indicate in the airbag control unit?
The error code B1605 signifies a serious internal malfunction of the airbag control unit, often at the hardware level. Common causes include moisture damage, electrical faults in internal components, or corrupted data following an accident. The control unit may switch to a safety mode that disables the airbag function.
Technically speaking, B1605 indicates that the control unit’s self-diagnosis has detected an irreparable internal fault. This can affect the power supply, sensor processing, or internal memory modules.
As a result, the SRS warning light illuminates to alert the driver that the occupant protection system is either non-functional or only partially operational. Clearing the error is typically impossible without physical repair.
How do you recognize error B1605?
The primary symptom of error B1605 is a permanently illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light (SRS lamp) on the instrument cluster. Additionally, during diagnostics with workshop tools such as Tech2, the error code cannot be cleared consistently, and in some cases, communication with the control unit is completely disrupted.
The airbag warning light is the most obvious sign. It fails to extinguish after starting the vehicle, indicating an active, safety‑critical fault in the system.
When attempting to read the fault memory, B1605 appears as “internal error” or “airbag control unit malfunction.” Attempts to clear the code usually fail because the underlying cause persists.
In some cases, the control unit may be so severely damaged that it becomes unresponsive via the diagnostic interface, complicating troubleshooting and often confirming a severe internal defect.
What causes B1605?
The main cause of error code B1605 is frequently hardware failure due to moisture ingress, commonly seen in vehicles exposed to water damage. Other reasons include stored crash data after an accident, general electrical faults in components such as sensors or the power supply, and faulty programming in the device’s memory.
Especially among affected Saab models, error B1605 is often linked to vehicles that have been exposed to water. Penetrating water can lead to corrosion on the circuit board and destroy sensitive electronic components.
Following an accident—even minor rear-end collisions—so‑called crash data gets stored in the control unit’s memory. These data blocks interfere with normal operation and must be professionally reset to restore full functionality.
Error B1605 can also occur in combination with other fault codes. For Saabs, these often include B0110 (battery disconnect), B1019 (control unit not programmed), B1000 (general malfunction), or B2862 (side‑airbag ignition circuit), pointing to a more complex issue within the SRS system.
