What does error code B1617/84 mean?
Error code B1617/84 indicates a complete loss of communication with the front left crash sensor (Front Airbag Sensor LH). The suffix ‘84’ is crucial here, directly pointing to a physical fault in the signal line, such as a cable break, corrosion, or an interruption. The airbag control unit can no longer receive data from the sensor, classifies the system as unsafe, and activates the airbag warning light.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit continuously monitors the integrity and signals of all connected sensors. If the expected data packets from the front left impact sensor fail to arrive or the signal is implausible, error code B1617/84 is set. The system switches to a safe state, meaning that the airbag function for the affected area is disabled until the fault is resolved to prevent false activations.
Diagnosis of this error therefore focuses primarily on the physical connection between the sensor and the control unit. In most cases, the issue lies in the wiring or connectors, rather than an internal software fault within the control unit.
How do you recognize error code B1617/84?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1617/84 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle. Thus, the vehicle signals a malfunction in the safety system that requires immediate inspection, as passive safety is reduced in the event of a crash.
In addition to the active warning light, the error code remains stored in the airbag control unit’s (SRS module) fault memory. When read using an SRS‑compatible diagnostic tool, code B1617/84 appears as “Loss of communication with the front left airbag (crash) sensor” or a similar description.
Other symptoms are usually not observed, since the fault affects a specific component. The functionality of other vehicle systems remains unaffected; however, the protective function of the airbag system on the front left side is no longer guaranteed.
What causes B1617/84?
The main cause of error code B1617/84 is almost always a physical fault in the signal line connecting the front left crash sensor to the airbag control unit. This includes cable breaks, pinching, or corrosion at connector contacts. Less frequently, the sensor itself may be defective, or the control unit may have an internal fault.
First and foremost are faulty or damaged cables and connectors. Cable breaks caused by mechanical stress, frayed insulation near the wheel arch or engine compartment, and corroded or bent pins in the connectors are the most common triggers.
Another cause is loose or corroded contact points directly on the airbag control unit or the sensor. This creates increased contact resistance, intermittently or permanently disrupting communication.
In rarer cases, the front left crash sensor itself may have an internal defect and cease transmitting signals. Short circuits to ground or issues with the line’s power supply—often resulting from improper repairs or pre-existing damage from an accident—are also potential sources of failure.
Finally, an internal fault within the airbag control unit can prevent communication. Damaged circuit traces, cold solder joints at the control unit’s input pin, or stored crash data that forces the unit into an error state may be responsible when all external factors have been ruled out.
