What does error code B1624 mean?
Error code B1624 indicates a serious internal hardware fault in the airbag control unit or the BPGA module (Battery Power and Ground Architecture). It often points to an open circuit at the lamp switch output or a status error in the central power relay, suggesting defective electronic components such as voltage regulators or microcontrollers.
Technically speaking, this diagnostic trouble code (DTC) signals an interruption or malfunction in the control unit’s internal power supply. The unit can no longer perform its functions correctly, potentially causing widespread electrical malfunctions throughout the vehicle. The root cause is almost always a physical defect on the circuit board.
This error is not triggered by faulty software or coding but rather by the failure of critical hardware components. Possible causes include overload, short circuits, damage from voltage spikes (e.g., during improper jump-starting), or moisture ingress leading to corrosion and conductor damage.
What symptoms indicate error B1624?
The symptoms of error B1624 are often systemic and severe. Typical signs include starting problems up to complete inability to start, a black dashboard, failing instruments, and error messages such as “Electrical Malfunction” or “Charging System Fault.” Communication with multiple control units is frequently lost.
A very common symptom is that the vehicle either fails to start or becomes extremely difficult to start. The central power supply, often managed through the affected module, is disrupted, leaving critical systems without power.
Additional electrical failures may occur, such as side mirrors failing to fold after unlocking the vehicle or the dashboard remaining completely black with no displays. Sporadically flashing warning lights are also clear indicators.
In the workshop, the issue often manifests as diagnostic tools being unable to establish communication—or only able to establish limited communication—with several control units. The affected control unit essentially blocks the data bus, preventing access to other systems.
What are the causes of error code B1624?
The primary cause of error code B1624 is an internal hardware defect within the control unit. Most commonly, it results from failed components such as voltage regulators or microcontrollers, damage caused by voltage spikes, circuit overloads, or corrosion due to water ingress.
Defective electronic components on the circuit board are the most frequent source of failure. In particular, voltage regulators responsible for stable power supply or the central microcontroller itself may fail, paralyzing the entire device’s functionality.
External factors like voltage spikes—such as those resulting from improper jump-starting—can irreparably damage sensitive electronics. Short circuits or sustained overloading in the power supply circuit also lead to component failure.
Moisture ingress, often due to unnoticed leaks, is another typical cause. Water causes oxidation at solder joints and conductor traces on the circuit board, ultimately leading to interruptions in the power circuit and triggering error B1624.
Which vehicles are affected by B1624?
