What does B1632 indicate in the airbag control unit?
The error code B1632 points to a critical hardware defect in the airbag control unit (SRS). Specifically, this code signifies an EEPROM error—meaning there is a fault in the module’s non-volatile memory. As a result, safety‑related data can no longer be read or written correctly, leading to the deactivation of the entire airbag system.
The EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) is a specialized memory chip on the control unit’s circuit board. This chip permanently stores crucial system data, even when the vehicle is turned off.
This data includes calibration parameters, fault logs, and, in the event of a crash, so‑called crash data. A failure of this component disrupts the fundamental operation of the control unit, making proper functioning of the safety system impossible.
What symptoms occur with error B1632?
The most obvious symptom of error B1632 is the airbag warning light that remains illuminated on the instrument panel. It does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating a serious, active fault in the safety system. Consequently, the entire airbag system is disabled and will not function in the event of a crash.
The airbag warning light serves as the primary alert for the driver, signaling that the control unit has detected an internal fault during self‑diagnosis and has switched into a safety mode.
In some cases, the control unit may also become inaccessible via the OBD interface. Diagnostic tools will then be unable to establish a connection or retrieve any fault codes, as internal communication is disrupted by the hardware defect.
Why does error code B1632 occur?
The main cause of error code B1632 is a physical defect in the EEPROM memory chip itself. Such defects can arise from material fatigue, aging, or thermal stress. Additional causes include voltage spikes in the vehicle’s electrical system, moisture damage to the circuit board, or mechanical damage to the control unit.
A defective EEPROM chip is the most common source of this issue. Electronic components have a limited lifespan, and especially in older vehicles, internal failures of the memory chip may occur.
External factors such as short circuits or overheating within the control unit can also damage the sensitive chip. Similarly, water or moisture damage caused by corrosion can lead to broken traces and ultimately result in EEPROM failure.
