What does error code B1633 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1633 indicates a specific electrical fault: a short circuit to the vehicle battery in the left exterior mirror circuit on the driver’s side. The airbag control unit (SRS) detects this fault, stores the code, and often enters a safety mode to prevent malfunctions of the restraint system.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit monitors not only the airbag components themselves but also adjacent systems. If it detects an abnormally high current flow in the exterior mirror circuit—indicative of a short circuit to the supply voltage—it classifies this as a critical fault.
Although the fault appears to affect a convenience feature, it is logged in the safety‑critical SRS module. The system cannot guarantee that this electrical issue will not negatively impact the proper functioning of the airbags in the event of a crash, so it triggers a warning.
How do you recognize error code B1633?
The primary symptom of error code B1633 is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light (SRS warning lamp) in the instrument cluster. Additionally, the functionality of the affected exterior mirror on the driver’s side may be impaired or completely lost. In many cases, the entire airbag system is deactivated as a precautionary measure.
The SRS warning light is the most obvious indicator. It does not extinguish after starting the vehicle, signaling to the driver that the restraint system is not fully operational. Simply clearing the error code without addressing the root cause usually proves ineffective; the fault reappears immediately.
Another telltale sign is malfunctioning of the driver’s side mirror. Depending on the nature of the short circuit, electric adjustments, the mirror heater, or other integrated functions may fail.
Deactivating the airbag system is a protective measure taken by the control unit. To avoid unintended deployment or failure at a critical moment, the system switches to a safe state until the fault is resolved.
What causes error code B1633?
The main cause of error code B1633 is a physical defect in the left exterior mirror circuit. This includes damaged cables due to mechanical stress, corroded or faulty connectors, and internal short circuits within the mirror itself. Less commonly, an internal issue may exist in the airbag control unit.
A frequent trigger is damaged wiring, especially around the door seal. Repeated opening and closing of the driver’s door can lead to cable breaks or frayed insulation, resulting in a short circuit.
The exterior mirror itself can also be the source of the problem. Moisture ingress may cause corrosion on internal circuit boards and contacts, leading to a short circuit. Similarly, a defect in the mirror’s heating element or adjustment motor can trigger the error.
In rarer cases—particularly when no fault is detected during inspection of the external circuit—the root cause may lie within the airbag control unit itself. Internal memory errors or a board-level defect processing signals from the mirror circuit can likewise generate error code B1633.
Which vehicles are affected by B1633?
Error code B1633 is known to occur in specific models from manufacturers such as Mitsubishi and Toyota. Particularly in vehicles where the airbag control unit monitors external circuits, this error code may be recorded.

How is error code B1633 professionally repaired?
Professional repair of error code B1633 requires a two‑step approach. First, the external short circuit must be located and fixed on the vehicle. If no fault is found there, the airbag control unit is analyzed and serviced at Airbag24, including final erasure of the stored error code.
The first and most crucial step takes place at your local workshop. Using a diagnostic tool, the fault is read out. Subsequently, cables, connectors, and the exterior mirror itself are thoroughly inspected for damage and short circuits. Often, the fault can already be identified here and resolved through rewiring or mirror replacement.
If the fault is confirmed not to originate in the vehicle’s wiring harness or the mirror, the airbag control unit is removed and sent to Airbag24. Here, a detailed component‑level diagnosis is performed. Our technicians examine relevant circuits, power supplies, and internal memory modules. Defective components are replaced with precision and care.
After successful repair, the control unit’s fault memory is cleared. Once installed in the vehicle, the unit is fully functional again (plug-and-play), and the airbag warning light goes off. We provide a 12-month warranty on all our repairs.
