What does error code B1634 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1634 signals a critical internal fault in the airbag control unit, often caused by permanently stored crash data or a hardware failure such as a defective EEPROM chip. This results in the airbag warning light remaining on continuously and a complete disabling of safety functions, particularly in models like the Citroën C4 I.
Technically, code B1634 belongs to the B16XX series, which indicates non-erasable event data or severe internal errors within the control unit. Following an accident or due to hardware failure, the ECU locks itself to prevent erroneous airbag deployment.
The consequence is that the entire airbag system becomes deactivated. However, electronic repair is usually possible in this scenario, restoring full functionality to the original control unit.
How can you recognize error B1634?
The primary symptom of error code B1634 is a continuously illuminated or flashing airbag warning light on the instrument panel. Additionally, communication with the airbag control unit via a diagnostic tool may be disrupted or completely blocked, and stored crash data cannot be erased. Accompanying codes such as B1034, B1042, or B1050 often appear as well.
The most obvious sign is the active airbag indicator light, constantly alerting the driver to a system malfunction. It does not turn off even after restarting the engine.
Another clear indication is that workshop diagnostic tools can no longer access the SRS/airbag control unit. Attempts to read or clear the fault memory fail because the unit does not respond.
The fault memory contains crash data that is permanently stored and cannot be removed using conventional methods. In some cases, additional error codes such as B1034, B1042, or B1050 are logged, pointing to further issues within the system.
What causes B1634?
The main cause of error B1634 is the storage of crash data after an accident, which locks the control unit. Other triggers include internal hardware problems like a faulty EEPROM chip, damage from overvoltage, or incorrect signals from external components such as defective seatbelt buckle sensors. These defects lead to the permanent activation of the airbag warning light.
In most cases, the error is triggered by an accident. The control unit permanently stores crash event data in the EEPROM and enters a safety mode that prevents further operation.
Internal hardware faults are also a common cause. These include defects in the EEPROM chip, cold solder joints, or other electronic components on the circuit board that fail due to aging or overvoltage.
External factors such as overvoltage in the vehicle’s electrical system—often caused by jump-starts—can also damage the sensitive electronics of the control unit. Similarly, defective sensors, such as those in seatbelt buckles, may provoke error B1634.
