What does error code B1637 mean?
Error code B1637 indicates a specific electrical fault—namely, a short circuit to the battery. This fault can occur in the mirror system or in other electrical components connected to the airbag control unit, signaling issues with power supply or communication.
Technically speaking, this means the control unit has detected an unauthorized electrical connection between a circuit and the positive battery voltage. Such a short circuit can disrupt signal processing and compromise the proper functioning of the entire airbag system.
The airbag control unit itself is a complex module responsible for diagnosing the entire restraint system. It processes signals from crash sensors, supplies power to ignition circuits, and stores all system-relevant faults—including B1637—in its internal fault memory.
How do you recognize error B1637?
The main symptom of error B1637 is a continuously illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the error cannot be cleared, and the control unit becomes inaccessible to diagnostic tools, making further troubleshooting on the vehicle more difficult.
A lit airbag warning light is always a serious indication of a malfunction in the safety system. The vehicle should be inspected immediately by a qualified workshop, as the protective function of the airbags is no longer guaranteed.

What causes error B1637?
The causes of error code B1637 are almost always physical in nature. Common external factors include water ingress leading to short circuits, damaged cables, and corroded connectors. Internally, defective sensors or leaking electrolytes from capacitors can trigger the fault.
One of the most frequent causes is water entering the control unit. Moisture on the circuit board inevitably leads to corrosion of traces and contacts, as well as short circuits between components, which can activate error B1637.
The peripheral components of the control unit must also be examined. Faulty wiring harnesses, loose or corroded connectors, and defective crash sensors can send incorrect signals to the control unit or disrupt its power supply. In particular, 3-door vehicles like the Citroën C4 often suffer from connector issues under the seats due to frequent adjustments.
On the circuit board itself, aging components may fail. A classic example is electrolytic capacitors, which leak over time, their corrosive fluid eating away at the traces and causing interruptions or short circuits.
