What does error code B1656 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1656 signals a specific and critical malfunction directly within the airbag control unit. The cause is usually found in stored crash data, an internal software fault, or a defect in hardware components such as the EEPROM memory. As a result, the airbag system is deactivated, making repair of the control unit unavoidable.
This error code is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that points directly to an internal fault in the Airbag Control Module (ACM). Unlike codes indicating defects in external sensors or seatbelt pretensioners, B1656 suggests that the central control unit itself has a malfunction and can no longer perform its safety-critical functions.
Specifically for vehicles like the Chrysler Pacifica WL, this error means that one or more system functions monitored by the control unit are blocked or defective. The unit can no longer ensure proper deployment of airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash.
At the electronic level, the cause often lies in permanent crash data written into the device’s non-volatile memory (EEPROM) after a collision. This safety mechanism locks the control unit to prevent further use without professional inspection and reset.
How do you recognize error B1656?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B1656 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. Additionally, the error code cannot be cleared from the fault memory using conventional diagnostic tools. In some cases, the control unit may even completely refuse communication.
The airbag warning light (SRS light) is the most obvious indicator. In a functioning system, it extinguishes after engine start-up and a brief self-test. If it remains lit continuously, it indicates an active, safety-relevant fault.
Another characteristic feature is the persistence of the error. When a workshop attempts to read and clear the fault memory with a diagnostic tool, error code B1656 either remains or reappears immediately, confirming an internal, permanent defect.
In more severe cases, communication with the airbag control unit may completely break down. The diagnostic tool receives no response from the control unit, making further analysis of connected airbag components impossible.
What causes B1656?
The main cause of error code B1656 is crash data stored in the control unit after a collision, which locks the device. Other causes include internal software errors, communication issues with airbags or seatbelt pretensioners, and hardware defects on the circuit board—such as problems with memory chips (EEPROM) or contact issues.
The most common trigger is the storage of crash data. After a collision—even a minor one where airbags do not deploy—the control unit permanently writes the event data into its memory. This lock serves safety purposes and can only be lifted through specialized electronic repair.
Internal software conflicts or damaged firmware can also lead to this error. If the control unit fails to complete its internal self-tests due to a software problem, error code B1656 is set.
Hardware defects represent another major cause. These include faulty memory chips (EEPROM) unable to reliably store or retrieve data, cold solder joints on the circuit board, or damage caused by moisture and short circuits in ignition circuits.
