What does error code B1681 mean?
Error code B1681 indicates a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit. Often, this error is a direct result of crash data stored after an accident, which locks the control unit. However, it can also point to a defect in internal electronic components, compromising the safety of the airbag system.
The B1681 code is not just an error message; it is also a specific part number for certain airbag control units, such as those installed in the Maserati GranCabrio M145C. Technically, this error means the control unit fails its self-tests and switches into a safety mode that prevents the airbags from deploying.
The cause is usually a hardware issue on the circuit board. Stored crash data in the memory chip (EEPROM) or a malfunction in the sensors or power supply can lead to the device’s internal logic becoming blocked. In such cases, simply clearing the fault memory with a diagnostic tool is not possible.
How do you recognize error B1681?
The primary symptom of error B1681 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. What causes B1681?
