What does error code B1698 mean?
Error code B1698 indicates a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit (SRS). Typically, this is a hardware defect on the main circuit board, caused by faulty circuits, defective capacitors, or other electronic components. As a result, the control unit can no longer ensure its safety functions.
B1698 is a specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that points to an issue within the control unit itself. Electronically, this means the internal self-diagnosis has detected an anomaly in the circuitry, power supply, or memory modules.
As a consequence of this error, the entire airbag system is deactivated as a precautionary measure to prevent false activations. Communication between the control unit and the sensors or airbag modules may also be disrupted, further explaining why the system is disabled.
How do you recognize error B1698?
The primary symptom is a permanently illuminated or flashing airbag warning light (SRS lamp) in the instrument cluster. Additionally, the error code cannot be cleared with a diagnostic tool, and communication with the control unit is often impossible. The airbag system is completely inoperative.
The most obvious sign is the activated SRS warning light. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating a persistent, safety‑critical fault.
Another clear indication is the failure of attempts to clear the error. Even after resetting via a diagnostic tool, error code B1698 returns immediately, as the underlying hardware cause remains unresolved.
In many cases, workshops are unable to establish a connection to the airbag control unit through the OBD port. The unit no longer responds to diagnostic requests, complicating fault analysis and pointing to a severe internal defect.
What causes B1698?
The main cause of error B1698 is electronic defects on the control unit’s circuit board. These include age‑related failures of components such as capacitors, resistors, or integrated circuits (ICs). Short circuits caused by moisture or issues with the power supply can also trigger this error.
Defects in electronic components rank first among the causes. The complex circuit boards in modern control units are prone to individual component failures, leading to this specific internal fault.
Short circuits—resulting, for example, from moisture ingress or mechanical damage to the housing—can harm sensitive electronics and generate error code B1698.
An unstable power supply, due to a weak vehicle battery or a faulty alternator, can likewise lead to internal memory errors or damage to components on the circuit board. Less frequently, firmware or software issues may be responsible, though these usually arise as a consequence of hardware problems.
In which models does error B1698 occur?
