What does error code B1726 mean?
Error code B1726 indicates a specific electrical fault in the vehicle’s safety system. It points to an open circuit in the switch for the driver’s seat adjustment, specifically in the “rear‑upper” area. The airbag control unit (SRS) registers this fault when it receives no valid or an interrupted signal from this switch.
According to the OBD2 standard, the precise definition is “open circuit switch driver’s seat rear‑upper.” This describes an open electrical connection, meaning the circuit is completely broken at one point. As a result, the control unit can no longer monitor the switch’s status, which is classified as a safety risk.
Although it is a seat‑adjustment switch, the fault is logged by the airbag control unit. This is because the exact seat position is critical for the strategic deployment of airbags in the event of a crash. A lack of information about the seat position therefore leads to a failure in the entire restraint system.
How do you recognize error code B1726?
The most obvious symptom of error code B1726 is the permanently illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the electric seat adjustment for the driver’s seat may function only partially or not at all. In some vehicles, especially Smart models, the fault can even prevent the vehicle from starting.
The airbag warning light remains on after the engine starts and does not turn off as usual. This is a direct indication that the SRS system has detected a fault and may not operate correctly in the event of a crash.
Another clear sign is a malfunctioning electric seat adjustment. Often, the seat can no longer be adjusted toward the “rear‑upper” position, while other adjustment functions may still work.
In Smart vehicles, error code B1726 can have more far-reaching consequences. Due to communication errors on the CAN bus caused by the fault, the immobilizer may remain activated, preventing the vehicle from starting.
What causes error code B1726?
In most cases, the primary cause of error code B1726 is hardware failure. First and foremost are a defective seat‑adjustment switch or a broken cable in the wiring harness. Corrosion at connector contacts or mechanical damage resulting from frequent seat adjustments are also common sources of the problem.
A faulty seat‑adjustment switch is the most frequent culprit. Internal contacts within the switch can wear out or break, leading to a permanent interruption of the electrical circuit.
Frequent seat movement over the years can cause cable breaks or loose connections in the wiring harness beneath the seat. Likewise, moisture ingress can lead to corrosion on the contacts of connectors or switches.
An additional possible cause is a defective coil spring that transmits electrical signals to moving parts. In rarer cases—particularly with Smart or Mercedes models—a software fault within the airbag control unit itself may trigger the error code, even if the external hardware remains intact.
Which vehicles are affected by B1726?
Although error code B1726 is a standardized DTC, it occurs particularly often in certain models from Smart, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW. Vehicles equipped with electric seat adjustment whose position is monitored by the airbag system are typically affected.
