What does error code B1730 mean?
Error code B1730 is a manufacturer-specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) indicating an electrical issue in a circuit connected to the airbag system. Most often, it points to an open circuit or fault in a switch circuit—such as for seat adjustment or traction control—rather than an internal defect of the control unit itself.
The precise definition of error code B1730 varies significantly depending on the vehicle manufacturer. Some brands interpret the code as “Traction Control Power Switch Circuit Open,” indicating an open circuit in the traction control switch.
Other manufacturers define it as “Driver Seat Assembly Down Switch Circuit Malfunction” or “Circuit of the switch for the driver’s seat rear down position.” In these cases, the system detects a malfunction in the electrical circuit responsible for lowering the driver’s seat. The primary cause is almost always electrical, not mechanical.
How do you recognize error B1730?
The main symptom of error code B1730 is the illumination of the airbag warning light (SRS symbol) on the instrument panel. Depending on the exact cause, the functionality of the affected system—such as electric seat adjustment or traction control—may be impaired or completely disabled.
If the airbag warning light stays on continuously or flashes intermittently, it indicates an active fault in the safety system. As a result, the entire airbag system is typically deactivated as a precautionary measure to prevent unintended deployment. Until the fault is resolved, there is no airbag protection.
In some cases, the control unit can no longer be accessed with a diagnostic tool, making troubleshooting more challenging. However, reading out the fault memory remains the first and most important step in narrowing down the problem.
What causes B1730?
The most common cause of error code B1730 is an electrical issue in circuits connected to the control unit. This includes damaged or pinched wires, corroded connectors due to water ingress, or faulty sensors and switches. Less frequently, a defective seat occupancy mat may be the culprit.
A typical source of failure is damaged wiring in the seat adjustment area. Constant seat movement can cause cables to break or their insulation to degrade, leading to short circuits or open circuits.
Water damage is also a widespread cause. Leaks from the sunroof, A-pillars, or door seals can allow moisture to enter the vehicle interior, causing corrosion in critical connectors—such as the body-harness connector in the left footwell.
Additional potential causes include defective connectors or sensors themselves, as well as improper wiring between individual SRS components and the central SRS control unit.
