What does B1738 indicate in the airbag control unit?
The error code B1738 signals a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit (SRS). Typically, the cause lies in the hardware—such as defective memory chips (EEPROM/Flash), a short circuit on the circuit board, or faulty electronic components. As a result, the control unit can no longer ensure its safety functions.
Technically speaking, this code points to a malfunction within the module’s electronic circuitry. This may be caused by defective capacitors, resistors, or breaks in the conductive traces. During self-diagnosis, the control unit detects these inconsistencies and deactivates the airbag system for safety reasons.
Although less common, software or firmware errors can also trigger code B1738. However, this is usually a secondary effect of an underlying hardware issue that prevents proper software execution. Therefore, precise component-level diagnostics are essential.
How do you recognize error B1738?
The main symptom of error B1738 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, communication between the diagnostic tool and the airbag control unit becomes impossible, and the error cannot be cleared via the OBD interface, indicating that the system has been deactivated.
A clear sign is the continuously lit airbag warning lamp, which does not turn off even after restarting the vehicle. This alerts the driver that the entire restraint system is out of service and would not deploy in the event of a crash.
In the workshop, the problem often manifests as the control unit failing to respond to diagnostic requests. Attempts to read or erase the fault memory fail because the internal fault blocks the communication interface.
Why does error code B1738 occur?
The primary cause of error code B1738 is an internal hardware defect. Most commonly, it involves aged or damaged memory chips (EEPROM), faulty capacitors, or short circuits on the circuit board. Stored crash data following an accident can also lock the control unit and trigger this error.
An internal hardware defect is the most frequent source of the problem. Electronic components such as memory chips or capacitors experience wear over time and may eventually fail. Vibrations or moisture can accelerate this process, leading to interruptions or short circuits on the circuit board.
After a crash, so‑called crash data is stored in the control unit. These data permanently lock the module, preventing reactivation. Even if the accident damage has been repaired, error B1738 persists until this data is professionally erased electronically.
In some cases, software or firmware issues within the control unit can also lead to this code. However, this is often a consequence of a hardware problem that compromises software integrity.

Error code B1738 specifically occurs in certain Porsche models, particularly across various generations and variants of the Porsche Cayenne. This includes both S and Turbo models, as well as the Cayenne Coupé. For these vehicles, repair represents the most cost-effective solution.
