What does error code B1739 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1739 indicates a communication or sensor fault within the airbag system (SRS). It points to an issue that can range from faulty connectors and defective sensors to an internal malfunction in the control unit itself. As a result, the system can no longer guarantee its protective function.
Technically speaking, this code signals that the airbag control unit—also known as the SRS module (Supplemental Restraint System)—has detected an irregularity in one of its circuits or in data transmission from one of its sensors. The control unit continuously performs self-tests, and B1739 is set whenever a measured value falls outside the predefined tolerance.
This may mean that communication with a critical component—such as a crash sensor, a seat‑occupancy sensor, or directly with the airbag module—has been interrupted. Consequently, for safety reasons, the system switches to a passive mode to prevent unintended deployment.
An internal fault within the control unit itself—perhaps on the circuit board due to defective components or faulty memory modules—can also be the cause. In such cases, the unit is no longer able to process incoming signals correctly.
How do you recognize error B1739?
The primary symptom of error B1739 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, no diagnostic connection can be established with the airbag control unit, and the error cannot be cleared permanently. In this state, the airbag system is completely disabled.
The most noticeable sign is the red or yellow airbag warning light. Unlike usual, it does not extinguish after starting the vehicle but remains constantly lit. This is a clear indication that the SRS has detected a critical fault and is not operational.
Another typical feature is a communication failure during diagnostics. When a workshop attempts to read the fault memory using a diagnostic tool, the airbag control unit may fail to respond. This often suggests a more serious internal fault or an issue with the unit’s power supply or data lines.
Even if the error code can be read out and cleared, it will reappear immediately in the fault memory in case of a persistent defect. The most important consequence for the driver is that, in the event of a crash, neither the airbags nor the seatbelt pretensioners will deploy.
What causes error B1739?
The causes of B1739 are varied, ranging from simple connection problems to complex hardware malfunctions. Common triggers include loose or corroded connectors, defective crash or seat‑occupancy sensors, damaged wiring harnesses, or a faulty coil spring on the steering wheel.
Defective or loose connectors are among the main culprits. Vibrations or corrosion—especially at connectors under the seats or in the engine compartment—can lead to high contact resistance or complete signal loss.
Defective sensors, such as side‑impact crash sensors or seat‑occupancy detectors, may send incorrect or no signals at all to the control unit. The system interprets this as a fault and sets code B1739.
A short circuit or break in the wiring harness is another potential source of trouble. Frayed cables or damage caused by rodents can impair sensitive signal lines and disrupt communication.
In vehicles with adjustable steering wheels, a faulty coil spring (also called a slip ring) can interrupt the connection to the driver’s airbag. This too is recognized as a system fault.
More severe causes include water damage to the control unit, leading to corrosion on the circuit board, or internal hardware defects. Individual electronic components—such as resistors, capacitors, or even the processor itself—may fail.
