What does error code B1787 mean?
Error code B1787 is a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) of the Occupant Classification System. It indicates that the airbag control unit has received a collision signal from the rear seat occupancy sensor or has detected a critical fault in its signal chain or calibration. The cause is usually hardware-related.
Technically, the airbag control unit (ECU) continuously monitors the seat occupancy sensors. Code B1787 is set when data transmitted by the rear seat sensor is implausible or suggests an impact, even though no crash event is recorded in the main control unit. For safety reasons, this puts the system into a fault condition.
It’s important to understand that B1787 is a diagnostic code and not a part number of the control unit itself. The error points to a problem in the seat’s peripheral circuitry or in the ECU that processes the sensor signals.
The system can trigger this error due to actual mechanical forces—such as a strong lift of the seat frame—or a faulty sensor, damaged wiring, or an internal defect within the ECU.
How do you recognize error code B1787?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1787 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This alerts the driver that a safety‑related system is not functioning properly and that occupant safety may be compromised.
In most cases, the airbag warning light remains on immediately after starting the vehicle and does not extinguish as usual following the self‑test. This indicates a persistent, stored fault.
Depending on the vehicle model, additional messages may appear on the information display, signaling a malfunction in the airbag or occupant protection system. Communication with the control unit via a diagnostic tool may be limited if an internal defect is present.
What causes B1787?
The most common causes of DTC B1787, in order of priority, are a defective rear seat occupancy sensor, mechanical damage to the seat frame, incorrect calibration (zero‑point deviation), or an internal electronic fault within the airbag control unit itself, including stored crash data.
The rear seat occupancy sensor and its wiring take center stage in diagnostics. Damaged cables, corroded connectors, or a faulty sensor are primary sources of failure.
Another significant cause is mechanical damage to the sensor assembly within the seat frame. According to manufacturer service bulletins (TSBs), even a forceful lifting of the seat can trigger this error. In some cases, TSBs even mandate replacing the entire seat frame.
Incorrect calibration is also a frequent culprit. After removing the seat, performing repairs, or under heavy load, the system’s zero point may shift. Proper zero‑point calibration using an OEM diagnostic tool such as Techstream can often resolve the issue.
Finally, an internal defect in the airbag control unit cannot be ruled out. This includes damaged memory chips, power supply issues on the circuit board, or stored crash data that locks the module.
Which models experience B1787?
Error code B1787 specifically occurs in Toyota‑group vehicles equipped with an Occupant Classification System. This fault is particularly well‑known in Lexus models. At Airbag24, we repair this error for the following models, among others.
