What does error code B1791 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1791 is a specific diagnostic entry in the airbag control unit that points to issues within the restraint system. As an OBD-II B-code, it falls under the body electronics category and often indicates faulty connections, sensors, or internal defects in the control unit itself that prevent proper operation of the airbag system.
This error is stored in the airbag control unit’s fault memory when the system detects an irregularity that could compromise occupant safety. It is part of the standardized OBD-II diagnostic system, with the “B” prefix (Body) referring to faults in body electronics and safety systems.
Technically, the code means that a particular circuit, sensor reading, or internal self-test of the control unit has fallen outside the manufacturer-defined tolerance limits. This immediately triggers the activation of the airbag warning light.
What symptoms are associated with B1791?

Ingressing moisture can cause corrosion on the control unit’s circuit board or on connected sensors, altering electrical resistances and producing erroneous readings that the system interprets as error B1791.
Internal defects within the control unit itself—perhaps due to improper repairs in the past—are another potential cause. Damaged components on the circuit board can result in persistent malfunctions.
