What does error code B179X indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B179X signals a serious internal fault in the airbag control unit (SRS module). Typically, the cause is hardware damage, corruption of the internal memory (EEPROM/Flash), or the storage of crash data that locks the control unit. This results in permanent deactivation of the airbag system for safety reasons.
Technically speaking, code B179X points to an internal malfunction where the control unit can no longer successfully complete its self-test. This may be triggered by various issues on the circuit board, ranging from defective soldered components to damage to the memory chips (EEPROM or Flash) that store the operating software and vehicle data, including so‑called crash data.
Once this error is detected, the control unit enters a locked state. The system is marked as non‑functional, the airbag warning light remains permanently illuminated, and in many cases, external communication via the diagnostic interface (e.g., CAN bus) is also disabled to prevent incorrect activation or triggering.
What symptoms appear with error B179X?
The primary symptom of error B179X is a permanently lit airbag warning light on the instrument cluster that does not extinguish even after a restart. Additionally, it is often impossible to access the airbag control unit with a diagnostic tool because communication through the diagnostic interface is blocked.
The most noticeable sign is the continuously illuminated SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) or airbag indicator light. It clearly informs the driver that the entire restraint system is out of service and that airbags would not deploy in the event of a crash.
Another common symptom is complete loss of communication with the control unit. If a workshop attempts to read the fault memory via the OBD interface, the module will not respond. This confirms the device’s internal lockout status and complicates conventional diagnostics.
Common causes of error B179X
The main cause of error B179X is the storage of crash data following an impact or misfire, which locks the control unit. Other reasons include internal electronic faults such as damaged traces, corrupted memory modules (EEPROM/Flash), or defective SMD components. Problems with wiring or power supply can also trigger this error.
Stored crash or event data is the most frequent trigger. After an impact—or even a severe jolt causing a pretensioner or airbag to misfire—irreversible data gets written into memory. This “crash‑lock” function ensures safety by preventing further use of a potentially damaged system.
Defective internal electronics are another major cause. These include components damaged by overvoltage, corrupted data in EEPROM or Flash due to aging or voltage fluctuations, faulty voltage regulators on the circuit board, or physically damaged traces and solder joints.
External factors such as issues with connectors, ground connections, or power lines can also lead to internal malfunctions. Corrosion caused by moisture or damaged wiring harnesses disrupts the module’s power supply and may result in implausible conditions, ultimately leading to error B179X.
In which vehicles does error B179X occur?
Error code B179X occurs, among others, in Toyota vehicles. How is error B179X repaired?
