What does error code B1804 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code B1804 is a specific diagnostic trouble code (DTC) that points to a hardware fault in the airbag system. It signals a short circuit to the battery in the lamp output circuit for the reverse light. The control unit detects an abnormally high current flow, stores the fault, and activates the warning light.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit, as the central control module, continuously monitors all connected circuits. When the on-board diagnostic system measures an unusually high current in the reverse light’s output circuit, it interprets this as a direct short circuit to the positive battery voltage.
This condition represents a serious electrical malfunction that can compromise the proper functioning of the entire restraint system. The control unit enters a safety mode, stores error code B1804 in its fault memory, and alerts the driver to the issue.
How do you recognize error B1804?
The primary and most obvious symptom for the driver is the persistent illumination of the airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This indicates a fault that may impair the functionality of the airbags. During diagnosis, error code B1804 will be retrievable from the control unit’s fault memory.
The airbag warning light illuminates immediately after starting the vehicle and remains on. This is a clear indication that the control unit’s self-diagnosis has detected an active, safety‑relevant fault.
As a result of this fault, the entire airbag system may be deactivated as a precautionary measure. This means that in the event of a crash, the airbags might fail to deploy, posing a significant safety risk.
What causes B1804?
The main cause of error code B1804 is a direct electrical short circuit to the battery in the relevant circuit. Common triggers include damaged cable insulation, moisture ingress leading to corrosion and leakage currents, or defective connectors. An internal defect within the airbag control unit itself can also trigger this error.
Damaged cables or faulty sensors are among the most frequent sources of failure throughout the airbag system. A frayed insulation layer can create direct contact with the vehicle body or other live conductors, resulting in a short circuit.
Water damage is another common cause. When moisture penetrates the control unit or its connectors, it can lead to corrosion on the circuit board and short circuits between traces.
Connection issues—such as loose or corroded connectors—can also produce implausible electrical readings and ultimately trigger an error code like B1804. Especially in vehicles with high mileage or heavy mechanical stress, connector joints often represent weak points.
In which vehicles does error B1804 occur?
Error code B1804 is particularly diagnosed in certain models manufactured by Toyota. Workshop experience shows that the Toyota HiAce van of the H200 series, also known as the Commuter, is especially prone to this specific problem in the airbag control unit.
