What does error code B1808 mean in the airbag control unit?
The error code B1808 indicates a short circuit in the rear light output circuit to the battery, which is directly detected by the airbag control unit. Although this fault often affects lighting systems, within the context of the airbag system it points to a critical electrical malfunction caused by faulty wiring, defective cables, or moisture inside the control unit itself.
Technically, the airbag control unit monitors various circuits to ensure system integrity. Code B1808 is set when the electronics detect an unacceptably high current flow from the rear light output directly to the positive battery terminal. This can compromise the entire safety system, as such shorts may also disrupt other sensitive components of the control unit.
The root cause is often not in the light itself, but rather in the periphery of the airbag control unit. A faulty ground connection, a frayed cable, or ingress of moisture can trigger this error and put the control unit into a safety mode that disables the airbag function.
How do you recognize error B1808?

What causes B1808?
The main causes of error code B1808 are physical defects in the wiring or connected components. These include broken cables, moisture‑induced shorts directly within the control unit, corroded connectors, or faulty sensors that generate an incorrect electrical load, which the system interprets as a short circuit.
A common trigger is damaged cables or poor contacts at the airbag control unit’s connectors. Mechanical stress, vibrations, or aging can lead to loose connections or insulation damage, resulting in a short to the battery.
Components such as the coil spring in the steering column, seat occupancy sensors, or seatbelt buckle sensors can also indirectly contribute if their wiring is damaged and causes a short within the system. A thorough visual inspection of these parts is therefore an essential part of the diagnosis.
Rarer, but still possible, is an internal defect on the airbag control unit’s circuit board itself. Here, defective solder joints or electronic components damaged by moisture may be responsible for the reported short circuit.
