What does error code B1852 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1852 indicates that permanent crash data is stored in the airbag control unit. This condition typically occurs after a collision and puts the module into a locked mode, often displayed as “internal error 65 3 550.” As a result, conventional workshop diagnostic tools cannot erase this data.
Technically speaking, during a collision, the control unit receives signals from the impact sensors and activates the corresponding restraint systems, such as airbags and seatbelt pretensioners. At the same time, it writes an irreversible record—known as crash data—into its internal memory (EEPROM).
This data serves as a kind of black box, locking the control unit’s functionality to prevent reuse without professional inspection and repair. The system enters a safety state that keeps the airbag warning light permanently illuminated.
How can you recognize error B1852?
The most obvious symptom of error B1852 is the continuously lit airbag warning light (SRS symbol) on the instrument cluster, which does not turn off even after restarting the vehicle. Additionally, communication with the airbag control unit via a diagnostic tool is often impossible.
