What does error code B1864-004 mean?
Error code B1864-004 indicates excessively high resistance in the ignition circuit of the passenger‑side seatbelt pretensioner. Technically, it identifies a problem with component R12/2—the igniter of the seatbelt pretensioner (Squib Circuit of Passenger Seatbelt Pretensioner). The control unit detects that the electrical resistance in the circuit is outside the specified tolerance, which could prevent activation in an emergency.
In detail, the airbag control unit continuously monitors the electrical resistance of all connected pyrotechnic components, such as airbags and seatbelt pretensioners. A resistance value that is too high, as indicated by this error code, points to an open circuit.
This open circuit can be caused by a damaged cable, a corroded connector, or a defect within the igniter itself. As a safety precaution, the affected component is deactivated, and the SRS warning light on the instrument panel illuminates to alert the driver.
How do you recognize error B1864-004?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1864-004 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS lamp) on the instrument panel. In many cases, a warning message also appears on the vehicle’s display. During diagnostics, error code B1864-004 can be read as “permanent” or “stored.”
The airbag warning light fails to turn off after the engine starts. This is a clear indication that the airbag system has detected a critical fault and at least one component is not functioning properly.
Depending on the vehicle’s equipment, a text message such as “SRS System Malfunction” may appear on the display. When reading the fault memory with an appropriate diagnostic tool, error code B1864-004 is displayed along with the specific description: “Resistance in Passenger Seatbelt Pretensioner Ignition Circuit Too High.”
What causes error B1864-004?
The main cause of error B1864-004 is a physical break in the ignition circuit of the passenger‑side seatbelt pretensioner. This could be a defective pretensioner (igniter), a damaged wiring harness, or a corroded connector. Only after ruling out these external components is an internal fault in the airbag control unit considered as the root cause.
A common cause is a defect in the igniter (squib) within the seatbelt pretensioner itself. Due to aging or material fatigue, internal resistance may increase, or the ignition wire may break, resulting in an open circuit. This can be confirmed through a resistance measurement directly on the component.
The wiring harness running from the control unit to the seatbelt pretensioner is another potential source of failure. Especially beneath the seat or along the center console, cables can break due to mechanical stress—such as seat adjustments or vibrations. Corroded or loose connectors also lead to excessive contact resistance.
If both the seatbelt pretensioner and the wiring are found to be in good condition during testing, the issue lies within the airbag control unit itself. A defect in the internal driver circuitry or in the sensing resistors for the relevant ignition circuit can trigger error code B1864-004.

Error code B1864-004 is particularly well known in vehicles manufactured by Mercedes-Benz. Specifically, this error code is frequently diagnosed in the airbag control units of the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class C216 Coupe, produced between 2006 and 2013.
