What does error code B1867 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1867 signals a specific fault in the ignition circuit of the side airbag, typically on the driver’s or passenger’s side. The cause is usually an electrical issue such as an open circuit or an improper resistance, triggered by a defective igniter, damaged wiring, or faulty connectors.
Technically speaking, the airbag control unit continuously monitors the resistance of all ignition circuits. If the measured value in the side airbag circuit deviates from the specified range—typically 3 to 4 ohms—the B1867 error is stored, and the SRS warning light illuminates.
This error code directly points to a problem in the peripheral components of the control unit. This means the fault often lies not in the control unit itself, but in connected parts such as the side airbag module in the door or the seatbelt pretensioner system.
How can you recognize error code B1867?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B1867 is the permanently illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument panel. The system thus indicates a malfunction, causing the affected side airbag to be deactivated for safety reasons and preventing it from deploying in the event of a crash.
Once the control unit detects the error, the warning light remains on after starting the vehicle and does not extinguish as usual. Attempting to clear the fault memory without addressing the root cause generally results in the error reappearing immediately.
A diagnosis using a suitable OBD2 scanner confirms the suspicion by reading out error code B1867 from the airbag control unit’s fault memory. Typically, no other direct symptoms are observed on the vehicle.
What causes B1867?
The main cause of error B1867 is a physical or electrical defect in the side airbag’s ignition circuit. This frequently includes a faulty igniter within the airbag module or seatbelt pretensioner, damaged wiring due to mechanical stress, or corroded or loose connectors.
A common trigger is a defective igniter (squib) itself. This pyrotechnic component may fail due to age or external influences, leading to an open circuit or incorrect resistance in the ignition circuit.
Damage to the wiring harness running from the control unit to the side airbag is also a frequent cause. Especially around the door seal or during seat adjustments, constant movement can result in wire breaks or loose connections.
Corrosion and moisture at the connectors—particularly those on the side airbag module behind the door panel—can alter the resistance in the ignition circuit and trigger the error. A visual inspection and resistance measurement are crucial here.
Rarely, an internal defect within the airbag control unit itself may be responsible, where the activation of the relevant ignition circuit is faulty.
In which models does B1867 occur?
Error code B1867 is particularly commonly diagnosed in Mercedes-Benz vehicles, especially in the ML-Class W163 series. However, this error can also appear in various other models equipped with comparable side airbag and seatbelt pretensioner systems.

Professional repair begins with a precise diagnosis on the vehicle to pinpoint the source of the fault in the ignition circuit. After resolving the external cause or sending the control unit to Airbag24, an electronic analysis and restoration takes place, followed by a final test to ensure full functionality, backed by a 12-month warranty.
First, a qualified workshop must confirm the error using a diagnostic tool and identify the affected ignition circuit. Next, the door panel is removed to inspect the side airbag, wiring, and connectors.
A resistance measurement of the ignition circuit is essential. If the value falls outside the tolerance range (typically 3–4 ohms), the faulty component—whether it’s a connector, wiring harness, or the airbag itself—is repaired or replaced.
If the root cause is suspected to lie within the airbag control unit, the unit is removed. Upon shipment to Airbag24, our technicians conduct a thorough examination of the internal electronic components and rectify any board-level faults.
After successfully repairing the external components and/or the control unit, the system is reinstalled in the vehicle.
