What does error code B1871 mean?
Error code B1871 indicates a malfunction in the passenger airbag deactivation system. Technically, it is often referred to as “Passenger Airbag Disable Module Fault” or, as with Mercedes-Benz, as “Ignition Circuit / Ignition Pillar Cable Error” (B1871-004). The cause usually lies in a faulty resistor within the ignition circuit, damaged wiring, or a defect in the ignition pill itself.
This system is responsible for deactivating the passenger airbag when, for example, a child seat is installed on the front passenger seat. A fault in this area poses a significant safety risk, as the proper functioning of the airbag can no longer be guaranteed and the entire system is preemptively disabled.
Specifically at Mercedes-Benz, code B1871-004 often points to excessively high resistance in the ignition circuit of component R12/21. This component is the ignition pill for the right front airbag. The control unit detects this implausible electrical value and sets the error code to prevent unintended deployment or malfunctions in the event of an accident.
The fault may be located directly in the deactivation module, in the associated cables and connectors, or as an internal hardware failure within the airbag control unit itself.
How do you recognize error B1871?
The primary and most obvious symptom of error B1871 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. Additionally, the status indicator for passenger airbag deactivation (often labeled “Passenger Airbag OFF”) may display incorrect information or fail completely. With this issue, the vehicle will not pass its mandatory technical inspection.
The airbag warning light illuminates immediately after starting the vehicle and does not turn off. This is a clear signal from the on-board diagnostic system that a safety‑related fault exists and that the entire airbag system may be deactivated.
During a workshop diagnosis, error code B1871 can be read from the airbag control unit’s fault memory. This confirms the electronic malfunction and serves as the first step in systematic troubleshooting.
What causes B1871?
The main causes of error code B1871 are almost exclusively hardware defects. First and foremost are damaged cables and corroded connectors in the airbag system’s ignition circuit. Other common reasons include defective pyrotechnic components such as the airbag ignition pills, or an internal fault within the airbag control unit itself—such as a short circuit or water damage.
Defective or damaged cables and connectors are a very common cause. Especially in the area beneath the front seats, cables can break or lose their insulation due to seat adjustments or aging, leading to implausible resistance values.
The airbag ignition pills (pyrotechnics) themselves can also fail. These components have a limited lifespan and may develop electrical faults that the control unit recognizes as malfunctions and logs with code B1871.
A defect in the airbag control unit itself is another possible cause. Internal components on the circuit board can be damaged by moisture, voltage spikes, or aging, preventing proper activation of the airbag components.
Which vehicles are affected by B1871?
