What does error code B1993 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B1993 signals a specific internal fault within the airbag control unit. This error typically points to issues in the internal electronics, communication failures, or voltage fluctuations that impair the entire restraint system’s functionality. The control unit may switch into a safety mode, preventing normal operation.
Technically speaking, code B1993 belongs to the family of airbag diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) and is set by the control unit itself when internal self-tests fail. These faulty conditions trigger the activation of the airbag warning light on the instrument cluster, alerting the driver to a serious malfunction in the safety system.
How can you recognize error code B1993?
The primary symptom of error B1993 is a continuously or intermittently illuminated airbag warning light. Often, the control unit becomes unresponsive to diagnostic tools, complicating further fault analysis. Stored crash data cannot be cleared in this state, and the error code remains permanently lodged in the fault memory.
The most noticeable sign is the active airbag warning light in the cockpit, indicating that the airbag system is not operational and would not deploy in the event of a crash.
Another clear indication is the lack of communication between the control unit and an external scan tool. Workshops report being unable to access the fault memory or live data from the airbag module.
Additionally, error B1993 cannot be erased from the fault memory even after the apparent cause has been resolved, suggesting an internal, locked condition of the device.
What causes error B1993?
The causes of error code B1993 are varied and usually hardware-related. Common triggers include short circuits in the internal electronics, undervoltage or overvoltage due to a defective battery or alternator, as well as physical damage caused by cable breaks or ingress of liquids. Internal component failures after prolonged vehicle inactivity can also lead to this error.
Electrical disturbances such as short circuits or voltage fluctuations are a major cause. A faulty onboard voltage—resulting from a weak battery or a defective alternator—can permanently damage the control unit’s sensitive electronics.
Mechanical damage to wiring, such as broken cables or corroded connectors, can likewise result in this error. Particularly for control units installed beneath the seats, spilled liquids may cause irreparable damage to the circuit board.
It is important to also consider related error codes. Codes B1992 (driver-side side airbag circuit shorted to battery voltage) and B1994 (driver-side side airbag circuit open) often point to specific problems in the wiring or the airbag components themselves, which must also be diagnosed.
