What does error code B1999 mean?
Error code B1999 indicates an abnormally low electrical resistance in the ignition circuit of the passenger-side airbag. This condition suggests a potential short circuit or a defect within the airbag module itself. The control unit recognizes this deviation as a critical safety risk and deactivates the affected airbag circuit to prevent unintended deployment.
Technically, the airbag control unit continuously monitors the resistance of all igniters in the system. A predefined target resistance ensures that the igniter can reliably fire in the event of a crash. When the diagnostic scan reports error B1999, the measured resistance value falls below the manufacturer‑specified tolerance range.
An excessively low resistance means that current is flowing too easily through the ignition circuit. This can result from an internal fault in the airbag’s igniter or from a short circuit in the wiring harness—often caused by damaged insulation. The control unit interprets this as an unsafe condition and sets the error code.
How do you recognize error B1999?
The most obvious symptom of error code B1999 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light—also known as the SRS lamp—in the vehicle’s dashboard. This indicator does not turn off after the engine starts, signaling to the driver that the restraint system has detected a fault and is no longer fully operational.
As soon as the ignition is turned on, the airbag control unit performs a self‑test of all connected components. If it detects the abnormally low resistance in the passenger-side airbag’s ignition circuit, the warning light immediately and persistently illuminates.
There are no other direct effects on driving performance. However, the full protective function of the airbag system is compromised, as the affected airbag may fail to deploy in the event of a collision.
What causes error B1999?
The primary cause of error B1999 is typically a hardware malfunction in the peripheral components of the airbag system. Most commonly, this involves a defective airbag igniter, damaged wiring harness, or corroded connectors. Only after these external sources of failure have been ruled out does an internal fault in the airbag control unit come into focus.
A detailed analysis usually reveals one of the following issues: A faulty igniter in the passenger‑side airbag module is among the leading causes.
Problems with the wiring harness are equally common. Cable breaks, worn insulation, or corrosion and moisture in the connectors—especially beneath the passenger seat—can lead to short circuits and thus to low resistance.
In rarer cases, a malfunctioning seat occupancy sensor may indirectly contribute to system issues. Additionally, on certain vehicle models, a defective steering wheel spiral cable (coil spring) can cause disruptions throughout the entire airbag system, even if error B1999 specifically points to the side airbag.
If all external components and their wiring pass inspection, the root cause almost certainly lies within the airbag control unit itself, where an internal electronic fault misinterprets or processes the resistance measurement incorrectly.

Error code B1999 primarily occurs in specific vehicles manufactured by North American automakers. Older model series such as the Dodge Ram and Pontiac models are particularly known for this particular issue related to the resistance of the side airbag ignition circuit.
