What does error code B1B02 mean in the airbag control unit?

Error code B1B02 indicates an open circuit in the airbag system. This means that an electrical connection to the airbag control unit (SRS ECU) or within one of its controlled components has been interrupted. As a result, the control unit cannot properly communicate with critical safety elements such as airbags, sensors, or the clockspring, disabling the system’s protective function.

Technically, the control unit detects that an expected electrical resistance is missing in one of the airbag circuits. This interruption prevents a firing signal from reaching the relevant airbag components—such as the igniters (squibs)—in the event of a crash. For safety reasons, the system shuts down and stores error code B1B02 in its fault memory.

This diagnostic code is widespread and affects numerous vehicle manufacturers. While the exact definition may vary slightly, the underlying cause remains a physical break in the electrical wiring.

How can you recognize error B1B02?

The primary symptom of error code B1B02 is a continuously illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument panel. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle.
