What does error code B21 mean?

Error code B21 indicates a critical open circuit in the ignition circuit of the steering wheel airbag. In most cases, the cause is a defective clockspring or a wiring issue resulting in a wire resistance outside the manufacturer’s specified tolerance. The control unit then deactivates the affected airbag circuit.

Technically speaking, the airbag control unit (SRS ECU) continuously monitors the resistance of the ignition circuit for the driver’s airbag. If an open circuit—essentially infinite resistance—is detected, error code B21 (or manufacturer-specific code 21) is stored in the fault memory, and the airbag warning light illuminates.

Diagnosis therefore focuses primarily on the physical wiring from the control unit to the airbag module in the steering wheel, rather than necessarily on the control unit itself, as the problem is usually an external wiring issue.

How can you recognize error code B21?

The most obvious symptom of error code B21 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, during diagnostics with a scanner, the airbag control unit may become unresponsive or communicate incorrectly due to the interrupted safety circuit.

The airbag warning lamp (SRS light) fails to extinguish after starting the vehicle. This is a clear indication that the safety system has detected a serious fault and at least one component has been deactivated.

In some cases, attempting to read the fault memory may result in communication issues. The diagnostic tool receives no response or only incomplete responses from the airbag control unit, complicating further troubleshooting.

What causes error code B21?

The primary cause of error code B21 is very likely a mechanically worn or broken clockspring—the so‑called “clockspring”—in the steering wheel. Less frequently, loose or corroded connectors, a cable break in the steering wheel wiring harness, or an internal defect within the airbag control unit itself may be responsible.

The clockspring ensures electrical connectivity between the fixed steering column and the rotating steering wheel. Due to constant rotational movement, it experiences wear that can lead to interruptions in the wiring leading to the airbag.

Also check the connector contacts directly on the airbag module and on the control unit. Vibrations, moisture, or improper installation can cause contact problems and changes in resistance.

An internal defect in the control unit is rare when B21 occurs alone, but not entirely ruled out. If additional communication errors such as U1121 are also recorded, the bus communication and the module’s power supply must be inspected as well.

In vehicles with a crash history, stored crash data may also keep certain system components disabled until the data is professionally reset.

Error code B21 appears across several manufacturers, particularly in classic vehicles where it explicitly signals a disconnection of the steering wheel airbag. Affected models include Ford, Jaguar, Mazda, Porsche, and Pontiac, which may require repair of the airbag control unit.
