What does error code B2230 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B2230 indicates a specific electrical fault in the airbag system—more precisely, a short circuit to the battery in the second circuit (Loop #2) of the driver’s airbag. This points to a serious hardware issue that prevents the airbag from deploying correctly in the event of a crash and puts the control unit into a safety mode.
Technically speaking, a “short circuit to the battery” means there is an unwanted, persistent voltage connection in the airbag’s ignition circuit. The control unit performs a self-diagnosis at every vehicle start, measuring the resistance values of the ignition circuits. If it detects an implausible, permanent voltage reading, error code B2230 is set.
This condition compromises safe operation because, under these circumstances, the airbag cannot be reliably triggered. Consequently, the system deactivates the affected circuit and illuminates the SRS warning light to alert the driver to this critical safety deficiency.
How can you recognize error code B2230?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B2230 is the permanently illuminated airbag or SRS warning light on the instrument panel. This light fails to extinguish after starting the vehicle, indicating an active, safety‑relevant fault in the restraint system that requires immediate inspection.
In addition, error code B2230 remains stored in the airbag control unit’s fault memory. Reading the codes with an appropriate diagnostic tool confirms the specific cause and enables targeted troubleshooting.
Other functional impairments of the vehicle are generally not expected, as the fault is confined to the passive safety system. However, the most significant consequence is the deactivation of the airbag system, which could have fatal consequences in the event of a crash.
What causes error code B2230?
The main cause of error code B2230 is a physical defect in the driver’s airbag circuit. Often, the problem stems from damaged cables, a failure in the spiral cable (slip ring) behind the steering wheel, or corroded connectors. In some cases, the short circuit may even originate internally within the airbag control unit’s circuit board itself.
A very common weak point is the spiral cable, also known as the slip ring. Due to the constant rotational movement of the steering wheel, the flat ribbon cable embedded within can break over time or suffer insulation damage, leading to a short circuit.
The wiring and connectors between the control unit and the airbag module are also vulnerable. Vibrations, moisture, or mechanical damage can result in shorts or loose connections. A thorough visual inspection is therefore an essential part of the diagnosis.
Rarer but still possible is an internal defect within the airbag control unit. Electronic components or conductive traces on the circuit board may fail, causing an internal short circuit. Such issues require specialized repair at the component level.
Crash data stored after an accident can also lock up the control unit. Even if the short circuit is the primary cause, these data must be erased during a full repair to restore complete functionality.

Error code B2230 is particularly frequently documented in certain models of the Chrysler brand. The Chrysler PT Cruiser, across its various production phases, as well as the corresponding convertible model, are especially affected.
