What does error code B2248 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B2248 indicates a non-specific, internal fault within the airbag control unit (SRS ECU). There is no standardized, manufacturer‑independent definition for this code. However, in practice, it typically points to a serious malfunction of the internal electronics, ranging from defective components and damaged circuit traces to stored crash data that may prevent the module from functioning properly.
Although error code B2248 is not clearly documented in public databases, workshop experience interprets it as an indication of an internal system failure in the SRS control unit (Supplemental Restraint System). The control unit detects a deviation during its self‑test routines that cannot be attributed to a specific external component such as a sensor or seatbelt pretensioner. Instead, the root cause lies within the module itself, leading to a complete or partial loss of safety functions.
From an electronic standpoint, this could mean that a microcontroller, memory chip (EEPROM), voltage regulator, or CAN‑bus transceiver on the circuit board is faulty. In response, the system enters a safety mode, illuminates the airbag warning light, and stores error code B2248 in the fault memory to signal the internal issue.
How can you recognize error B2248?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B2248 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Often, the control unit can no longer be accessed via a standard diagnostic interface, as the internal fault may also impair communication over the CAN bus. In this state, the entire system is completely disabled.
The airbag warning light (SRS lamp) illuminates immediately upon ignition and does not extinguish after the usual system check. This is a clear sign that the safety system is not operational and would fail to deploy airbags or seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash.
In many cases, attempts to read the fault memory or clear the error prove unsuccessful. Diagnostic tools either receive no response from the airbag control unit or report that the fault remains persistent and cannot be cleared. This confirms suspicion of a severe internal hardware defect.
Possible causes of error code B2248
The main cause of error B2248 is an internal electronic fault on the control unit’s circuit board. Common culprits include cold solder joints, damaged SMD components, faulty microcontroller peripherals, or crash data that has been stored and locked following an accident. Corrosion caused by moisture can also lead to broken traces or short circuits.
A frequent cause is the storage of crash data. After a collision, many control units lock themselves to prevent reuse without proper inspection. This lockout can manifest as an internal fault like B2248 and must be reset by a specialized service provider.
Defective electronic components—such as capacitors, protection diodes, MOSFETs, or CAN‑bus transceivers—are another common source of problems. These parts may fail due to aging, voltage spikes, or thermal stress, disrupting the proper operation of the entire module.
In rarer cases, external factors like short circuits or interruptions in the wiring connected to seatbelt pretensioners or airbags can also result in secondary damage to the control unit. An example of such an external fault is code B0028, which signals a broken trace and may subsequently damage the control unit.
In which vehicles does error B2248 occur?
