What does error code B2290-24 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B2290-24 points to a specific hardware fault in the CAN bus circuit of the Occupancy Classification System (OCS). The airbag control unit cannot receive valid signals from the seat sensor, interprets this as a communication failure, and deactivates the passenger-side airbag system for safety reasons.
From an electronic standpoint, there is a malfunction in the CAN bus circuit. The OCS monitors the front passenger seat to activate or deactivate the airbag appropriately based on occupancy—whether an adult, a child seat, or no one is seated there. Faulty signals are registered by the control unit as a critical CAN error.
This error inevitably triggers the airbag warning light and stores the permanent error code B2290 with the suffix -24, which narrows down the fault to a specific signal or message subtype within the CAN bus.
How can you recognize error B2290-24?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B2290-24 is a continuously illuminated or blinking airbag warning light on the dashboard, flashing in a specific pattern. Reading the fault memory with an appropriate diagnostic tool confirms the code and indicates that the occupant protection system is not fully functional.
In affected Jaguar models, a distinctive blinking pattern of the warning light is often observed—for example, a cycle of one flash followed by six flashes. This serves as a visual indication from the manufacturer of a fault in the OCS area.
Additionally, the diagnostic log records error B2290-24 as either permanent or current. The system remains deactivated until the underlying hardware defect in the control unit is resolved, significantly compromising occupant safety in the event of a crash.
What causes error B2290-24?
The main cause of error code B2290-24 is a hardware defect within the electronic circuitry of the airbag control unit or the OCS sensor. Distorted signals from the seat sensor are interpreted by the control unit as a CAN bus error, indicating faulty signal processing or damaged components on the circuit board.
Before attributing the issue to the control unit, external factors such as the connectors beneath the passenger seat and the integrity of the seatbelt buckles should be checked. Corroded or loose contacts can produce similar symptoms.
In some cases, additional error codes appear alongside B2290, pointing to a more extensive problem within the restraint system. These include, for example, B2292 for the seatbelt pretensioner circuit, B2293(29) for the driver’s airbag, or the general system error B24 (Internal Diagnostic Monitor/System Disarm).
Which vehicles are affected by B2290-24?
Error code B2290-24 primarily affects Jaguar vehicles. In particular, the SS Jaguar model is frequently impacted by this specific CAN bus error in the seat occupancy detection system. While other manufacturers use similar systems, the unique identifier B2290-24 is strongly associated with Jaguar.
