What does error code B2291 indicate in the airbag control unit?
Error code B2291 signals a system anomaly detected by the airbag control unit. This fault is stored in the fault memory when the control unit identifies inconsistencies in sensor signals or internal processing. It points to a malfunction that may impair the proper functioning of the airbag system and requires immediate diagnosis.
The airbag control unit is the central control module of the passive safety system. Its primary function is to continuously evaluate signals from various vehicle sensors, ensuring precise activation of restraint systems such as airbags and seatbelt pretensioners in the event of a crash.
In addition, the control unit performs continuous self-diagnosis. When faults like B2291 are detected, it illuminates the airbag warning light on the instrument panel and stores the specific code to enable targeted troubleshooting at the workshop. It also communicates with other control units and is responsible for evaluating seat occupancy detection.
How can you recognize error B2291?
The most obvious symptom of error code B2291 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the dashboard. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle, indicating an active, safety‑relevant fault. Under these conditions, the proper functioning of the airbag system can no longer be guaranteed.
In some vehicles, a text message may also appear on the onboard computer display, alerting you to a malfunction in the airbag system.

What causes B2291?
