What does error code B2293(22) mean?
Error code B2293(22) indicates a specific internal hardware fault in the airbag control unit. It points to a permanent short circuit between the ignition circuit of the driver’s airbag stage 2 and the battery’s positive terminal. This prevents the airbag system from functioning correctly and results in the deactivation of the affected component.
Technically speaking, the monitoring electronics in the control unit have detected that the electrical wiring leading to the second igniter of the driver’s airbag is continuously connected to the vehicle’s supply voltage (positive terminal). Modern airbag systems often use two-stage initiators (Stage 1 and Stage 2) to adjust the deployment force according to the severity of the crash. Such a short circuit makes controlled deployment impossible.
As a consequence, the entire airbag system is placed into a safety mode. The fault is stored as a permanent, non‑erasable entry in the fault memory, and the airbag warning light illuminates to clearly alert the driver to this critical safety issue.
What symptoms are associated with B2293(22)?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error code B2293(22) is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This light does not turn off after starting the vehicle. Typically, there are no other noticeable impairments during normal driving; however, the airbag system will no longer be fully functional in an actual collision.
The airbag warning light—usually a red or yellow pictogram of a passenger with an airbag—remains constantly lit. This signals a serious fault requiring immediate diagnosis and repair to restore the vehicle’s passive safety features.
When attempting to clear the fault memory using a diagnostic tool, error code B2293(22) is immediately re‑classified as “permanent” or “static.” Erasure is only possible after successfully repairing the underlying cause.
What causes B2293(22)?
The main cause of error code B2293(22) is an internal defect within the airbag control unit itself, where components on the circuit board create a short circuit to the power supply. Other potential causes include damaged cable connections within the airbag system—such as a faulty coil spring—as well as moisture damage to the control unit.
An internal short circuit inside the control unit is the most common source of this fault. Electronic components like driver ICs or power transistors responsible for activating the igniters may fail over time, establishing a permanent connection to the battery voltage.
Damage to the wiring harness is also a possible cause. In particular, the coil spring (also known as the slip ring) in the steering wheel is a mechanically stressed component whose conductive traces can break or short-circuit. Connector contacts to the airbag module may likewise be affected.
Infiltrating moisture can lead to corrosion on the control unit’s circuit board. This corrosion creates unwanted conductive paths between components and can precisely trigger the described short circuit to the positive terminal.
