What does error code B2293 mean?

Error code B2293 indicates a specific electrical fault in the airbag system—more precisely, a short circuit to ground in the ignition circuit of the driver’s airbag’s second stage (Stage 2). This hardware defect interrupts the airbag’s operational readiness and results in deactivation of the system to prevent unintended deployment.

Technically speaking, this means that the electrical wiring responsible for igniting the second airbag stage has an unwanted connection to the vehicle’s chassis. The Airbag Control Unit (ACU) detects this abnormal condition through its continuous monitoring of the ignition circuit resistances and subsequently sets the error code.

The second ignition stage is designed to ensure controlled airbag deployment during severe collisions. A short circuit in this circuit poses a significant safety risk; therefore, as a protective measure, the system is switched into a safe, inactive state, which is indicated by the airbag warning light.

How can you recognize error B2293?

The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B2293 is a permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. This light does not turn off after the vehicle is started. Concurrently, for safety reasons, the entire vehicle’s airbag system is deactivated and will not function in the event of a crash.

As soon as the ignition is turned on, the Airbag Control Unit performs a self-test of all components. If it detects a short circuit to ground in the driver’s airbag circuit (Stage 2), the warning light immediately activates and remains on until the fault is repaired and the error memory cleared.

Moisture or water ingress into the Airbag Control Unit can also cause corrosion on the circuit board and lead to internal shorts between conductive traces. In rarer cases, defective seatbelt buckles communicating with the airbag system may likewise trigger this error code.

Error code B2293 occurs more frequently in certain models from Ford and Jaguar. Specifically affected are the Ford Mondeo, Galaxy, and Ranger, as well as various trims of the Jaguar XJ.
