What does error code B2443 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B2443 indicates a specific electrical fault in the airbag system of Saab vehicles. It signals a positive short circuit—i.e., a short to the positive voltage supply—in the ignition circuit of the driver’s seatbelt pretensioner. This error is registered by the airbag control unit with part number B2443 and results in the deactivation of the entire safety system.
Technically, the control unit detects an unauthorized current flow between the pretensioner’s ignition circuit and the vehicle’s positive power supply. Instead of a defined resistance value, the system measures a direct connection to the positive terminal, which is interpreted as a critical fault. This condition prevents the pretensioner from functioning correctly in the event of a crash.
The diagnosis and storage of this error inevitably triggers the activation of the airbag warning light, alerting the driver to the malfunction in the restraint system.
What symptoms indicate error B2443?
The primary symptom of error B2443 is a continuously or intermittently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS light) on the instrument cluster. Often, communication with the control unit via a diagnostic tool becomes impossible. Additionally, accompanying errors such as B2333, B2862, or B1605 may be stored in the fault memory.
The activated SRS light is the most obvious sign, indicating that the entire airbag system has been deactivated as a precautionary measure. This poses a significant safety risk and will inevitably result in failure during the mandatory technical inspection (HU).
In many cases, the control unit can no longer be accessed. Attempts to clear the fault memory or erase crash data fail. Sometimes, even the vehicle identification number stored in the control unit is no longer displayed, pointing to a deep-seated internal malfunction.
Code B2443 often does not occur in isolation. Accompanying errors such as B2333 (positive short circuit in the front driver-side airbag ignition circuit), B2862 (positive short circuit in the side airbag ignition circuit on the driver’s side), or B1605 (airbag control unit malfunction) suggest a systemic issue frequently stemming from a central cause.
Common causes of error code B2443
Often, the root cause of error B2443 is not an internal defect but rather peripheral issues. Low clamping forces at connector contacts—especially beneath the driver’s seat—can lead to increased contact resistance. Cable breaks, shorts caused by wear, or exposure to liquids are also typical triggers.
One of the most common sources of trouble is the connector assemblies. In particular, the connector under the driver’s seat is vulnerable. Vibrations and seat movements can weaken the clamping force of the contacts. Even a slight increase in contact resistance—from 3.0 ohms to 3.3 ohms, for example—represents a 10% deviation and is enough to trigger the error.
Damage to the wiring harness is another widespread cause. Shorts, broken wires, or cable fractures arise from mechanical wear, aging, or external influences. Spilled beverages that seep under the seat can cause corrosion and leakage currents at the connectors.
An unstable power supply due to a faulty battery or defective alternator can also lead to malfunctions in the sensitive airbag control unit. In rarer cases, an internal defect within the control unit itself may be responsible, triggered by an error during its internal self-test or other electronic faults.

Error code B2443 is specific to Saab vehicles equipped with the airbag control unit bearing part number B2443. Particularly affected models include the Saab 900 Convertible, the Saab 9-3 Aero, and the Saab 9-5 Turbo. For these vehicles, the error is a well-known issue.
