What does error code B2444 mean in the airbag control unit?
The error code B2444 indicates a specific internal issue within the airbag control unit (SRS module). In most cases, this code points to a hardware fault on the circuit board, a defect in the sensor circuit, or a communication problem between internal components. As a result, the control unit can no longer ensure its safety functions and activates the airbag warning light.
As a diagnostic trouble code (DTC) in category 'B' (Body), B2444 is logged when the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis detects a serious anomaly. The exact textual description may vary depending on the diagnostic tool used and the vehicle manufacturer, but it consistently refers to a malfunction within the module itself.
Technically speaking, the cause may lie in defective electronic components, such as the safing sensors, communication ICs (transceivers), capacitors, or the base voltage regulator. Fine cracks in solder joints caused by aging and thermal stress are also a common source of failure.
What symptoms appear with error B2444?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B2444 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS lamp) in the instrument cluster. In some cases, the light may flash sporadically, indicating a loose connection. Often, communication with the control unit via a diagnostic tool is also impossible.
The active airbag warning light signals that the entire safety system (SRS) is disabled. In the event of an accident, the airbags and seatbelt pretensioners will not deploy, posing a significant safety risk.

What are the most common causes of B2444?
The main cause of error code B2444 is internal hardware failure within the airbag control unit itself. This includes age-related failures of electronic components or damaged solder joints. External factors such as corroded connectors or unreleased crash data after an accident can also trigger the error.
First and foremost are defective components on the control unit’s circuit board. These include a range of parts—from capacitors and MOSFETs to specialized fuses and communication ICs responsible for data exchange.
A further frequent source of problems, especially in affected Saab models, lies in peripheral issues. Corroded or loose connectors, particularly under the seats or at the steering wheel’s coil spring, can lead to signal errors that the control unit interprets as an internal fault. Interruptions in the ground or power supply are also potential triggers.
Stored crash data that has not been properly cleared after an accident can likewise lock the control unit and result in the logging of internal error codes. In Saab vehicles, airbag-related issues often coincide with error codes B2867, B0096, and B0097, which indicate resistance or communication faults in the circuits.
