What does error code B2446 mean?
Error code B2446 indicates an open circuit in the RESCU/VEMS system of the airbag control unit. Technically, this means there is a break in the electrical wiring that prevents the control unit from receiving an expected signal. It is a specific OBD-II code pointing to a connectivity or wiring issue.
The airbag control unit serves as the central monitoring hub for the entire restraint system. It continuously processes signals from various sensors to ensure proper deployment of the airbags in the event of a crash.
When error B2446 occurs, the control unit’s built-in self-diagnostic system detects the interruption in the RESCU/VEMS circuit (Rescue and Vehicle Emergency Messaging System) and stores the fault. This results in deactivation of certain safety system components and activation of the warning light.
What symptoms indicate B2446?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B2446 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. After starting the vehicle, the light does not extinguish as usual following the self-test; instead, it remains lit to alert the driver to a system malfunction.
A functioning system typically signals its readiness by briefly illuminating the airbag light for about three seconds upon startup, then turning off. If the light stays on, this clearly indicates a stored diagnostic code such as B2446.
In some cases, the error may also impair the functionality of the RESCU/VEMS system, if installed and active in the vehicle. However, the most significant consequence is that the airbag system’s operational integrity can no longer be guaranteed.
What causes B2446?
The main cause of error code B2446 is physical issues with the electrical wiring. These often include poor connector contacts, corroded connections, or broken wires. In particular, frequent seat adjustments in three-door vehicles can damage the airbag connectors.
A very common source of failure is the connectors themselves. Cleaning the contacts with contact cleaner and ensuring the connectors are securely seated often resolves the issue.
Damaged wires within the wiring harness can also disrupt the RESCU/VEMS input circuit. Therefore, a systematic inspection of the wiring is essential.
Other potential sources of trouble in the system include the steering wheel coil spring, which wears out due to constant rotational movements, defective seatbelt buckles, or faulty airbag sensors—especially the sensor located in the driver’s door.
Lastly, moisture ingress into the control unit or connectors can lead to short circuits or corrosion, triggering the error. Likewise, any faulty power supply or ground connection to the control unit should be checked.

Error code B2446 is a well-known issue primarily affecting certain Saab models. These vehicles employ a system architecture where this specific error message is generated when the RESCU/VEMS input circuit is open.
