What does error code B25 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B25 indicates a specific fault in the airbag control unit that requires immediate repair. It points to a malfunction within the system that could prevent safety devices, such as airbags, from deploying reliably in the event of a crash. The error is detected by the control unit’s self-diagnostic function and stored in the fault memory.
The airbag control unit is the central brain of the restraint system. It continuously processes signals from vehicle sensors to detect a collision. In an emergency, it calculates the precise timing for airbag deployment and, via an internal ignition capacitor, supplies the necessary energy to ensure safe activation even if the vehicle battery fails.
In addition to this core function, the control unit performs ongoing self-diagnosis of the entire airbag system. When faults are detected—such as code B25—the airbag warning light illuminates, and the corresponding error is logged internally to enable targeted diagnostics.
How can you recognize error B25?
The primary symptom of error B25 is a permanently illuminated or intermittently flashing airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. In many cases, communication between the diagnostic tool and the airbag control unit also becomes impossible. Additional signs may include abnormally low supply voltage at the control unit or crash data stored internally that cannot be erased.
The activated airbag warning light is the clearest warning sign. It indicates that the system has detected an internal fault and that the airbags might be disabled in the event of a crash, posing a significant safety risk.
Another common symptom is the failure of diagnostic communication. If a workshop attempts to connect a scan tool to the control unit, no response is received, complicating precise fault analysis and suggesting a deeper internal defect.
In some cases, the control unit is explicitly flagged as “internally faulty” in the diagnostic report, or crash data recorded after an accident becomes locked and cannot be reset through normal procedures.
What causes error B25?
The causes of error code B25 are often physical in nature. Common culprits include poor electrical connections or defective airbag connectors—especially in three-door models due to seat movement. A worn-out steering wheel coil spring, water ingress into the control unit, damaged cables, or faulty sensors can also trigger the error and illuminate the airbag warning light.
A major cause frequently identified during visual inspections is mechanical issues with connector contacts. Particularly in vehicles with three doors, the cables and connectors beneath the front seats endure heavy stress from repeated folding and unfolding, leading to loose connections or cable breaks.
The steering wheel coil spring is another component subject to significant wear. It provides the electrical connection to the driver-side airbag and is constantly stressed with every steering movement, potentially resulting in failure over time and triggering error B25.
Other sources of errors are electronic in nature. Water inside the control unit can cause short circuits on the circuit board. Defective cables elsewhere in the vehicle, faulty impact sensors, or communication disruptions with other control units on the CAN bus system can also be identified as contributing factors.
Which vehicles are affected by B25?
Error code B25 primarily affects Mitsubishi vehicles. Specifically, the Mitsubishi Lancer CD and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution II are frequently impacted by this particular control unit issue. Repairing these models is a proven, cost-effective solution.
