What does error B2874 in the airbag control unit indicate?
The error code B2874 refers to a specific part number for an airbag control unit in Saab 9-5 models and indicates a serious internal fault. Typically, the module is locked due to stored crash data after an accident or suffers from an internal hardware defect, resulting in the deactivation of the entire airbag system.
Technically speaking, this is not a standardized DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code), but rather an internal designation for a fault condition that permanently impairs the functionality of the SRS module (Supplemental Restraint System).
In this state, the control unit often enters a lockout mode to prevent further uncontrolled airbag deployment following a triggering event. This lockout is stored deep within the non-volatile memory (EEPROM/NVRAM) and cannot be cleared using conventional workshop diagnostic tools.

In rarer cases, sporadic or intermittent malfunctions of the airbag display may occur before the fault is permanently recorded in the system.
What causes this error?
The main cause is an internal defect within the control unit itself, often triggered by crash data stored after an accident that locks the module. Other causes include hardware defects such as faulty voltage regulators, cold solder joints, or issues in the module’s internal power supply.
First and foremost is an internal hardware or firmware fault in the SRS module. This could involve a defective microprocessor, a damaged memory chip (EEPROM), or another electronic component on the circuit board.
After an airbag deployment, so‑called crash data are irrevocably stored in the control unit’s memory. This information permanently locks the module and must be erased through a specialized electronic intervention at the chip level.
