What does error code B2885 mean?
Error code B2885 indicates a serious fault in the airbag control unit, typically occurring in Saab models. In most cases, the cause is permanently stored crash data following an accident, which locks the control unit. Alternatively, the code may point to an internal hardware defect, such as damaged components or short circuits on the circuit board.
Technically speaking, after registering a crash, the airbag control unit enters a safety mode. It irrevocably stores the relevant crash data to prevent tampering and force a full system check. In this state, error code B2885 can no longer be cleared using conventional workshop diagnostic tools.
In addition to stored crash data, physical damage within the control unit itself can also be the cause. This includes defective microcontrollers or memory chips, damaged traces due to moisture ingress, or age-related failures of electronic components. Such hardware faults likewise result in the permanent storage of error code B2885.
In rarer cases, the error code may also be triggered by communication issues in the vehicle network or problems with the wiring of safety‑related sensors, such as seat‑occupancy sensors or seatbelt buckles. However, the primary source of the problem remains an issue directly within the control unit.
How do you recognize error code B2885?
The most obvious symptom of error code B2885 is the airbag warning light that remains constantly illuminated in the instrument cluster. Additionally, the airbag system’s fault memory often cannot be cleared, and communication problems may occur when attempting to read the control unit with a diagnostic tool.
The airbag indicator stays lit continuously immediately after starting the engine and does not extinguish as usual. This is a clear sign that the entire airbag system has been deactivated for safety reasons and would not deploy in the event of an accident.

Defective internal components represent the second major group of causes. These include blown microprocessors, malfunctioning memory chips, or corroded traces on the circuit board. Such damage often results from moisture ingress or electrical surges in the vehicle’s onboard network.
Peripheral issues can also trigger the error code. Faulty connections to seat‑occupancy sensors or seatbelt buckles may produce inconsistent data, which the control unit interprets as a serious internal fault and stores as error code B2885.
