What does error code B2990 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B2990 is a manufacturer-specific DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) for the airbag system (SRS). It typically indicates an internal fault that appears irreparable or a serious communication failure within the control unit itself. The root cause is usually stored crash data in the internal memory (EEPROM) or a defect in electronic components on the circuit board.
Technically, this error suggests that the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis has detected an anomaly that no longer ensures safe operation of the restraint system. As a result, the module enters a locked state to prevent erroneous deployment of airbags or seatbelt pretensioners.
Unlike faults related to external sensors or wiring, the B‑code B2990 points directly to the control unit. However, specialized repair shops can resolve this issue by performing targeted interventions on the hardware and memory of the device, avoiding the need for an expensive replacement of the entire module.
How do you recognize error B2990?
The primary and unmistakable symptom of error B2990 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Additionally, the entire occupant protection system is disabled, meaning that in the event of a crash, neither airbags nor seatbelt pretensioners will deploy. Reading out the fault memory is often no longer possible.
The airbag warning light (usually a red or yellow pictogram of a passenger with an airbag) does not turn off after starting the vehicle. This is a clear indication of a safety‑critical fault in the SRS system that requires immediate inspection.
In many cases, a diagnostic tool can no longer establish communication with the airbag control unit. Requests via the K‑Bus or CAN‑Bus remain unanswered because the control unit has effectively “shut itself down” due to the internal fault. This significantly complicates diagnosis in a conventional workshop.
What are the most common causes of error code B2990?
The main causes of error B2990 are either a software lock triggered by crash data stored in EEPROM or flash memory, or a physical defect in electronic components. These include damaged SMD components such as voltage regulators, capacitors, MOSFETs, or faulty solder joints on the circuit board.
After an accident or even a minor collision, so‑called crash data is permanently saved in the control unit’s memory. This data locks the module and prevents its reuse. Simply clearing the fault memory is then insufficient; the data must be reset at the chip level.
Another frequent cause is hardware failure. Overvoltage, aging, or thermal stress can damage components like voltage regulators, resistors, or capacitors. Microcracks in solder joints (cold solder joints) can also lead to sporadic or permanent malfunctions that trigger the internal B2990 error.
Before classifying the control unit as defective, external factors such as the power supply (fuses, ground connections) and connector integrity should be checked. In some cases, contact issues may produce similar symptoms, although the root cause of B2990 almost always lies within the device itself.

The manufacturer‑specific error code B2990 is especially well known in premium vehicles and is specifically offered for repairing airbag control units of certain models.
