What does error code B35 in the airbag control unit indicate?
Error code B35 indicates a specific internal fault within the airbag control unit, typically caused by hardware failure or a memory issue. This error message usually prevents the clearing of the fault memory and points to a serious malfunction in the electronic control system of the safety system.
Technically speaking, this code means that the control unit’s self-diagnosis has detected an internal defect. Unlike faults related to external sensors or wiring, the root cause here lies directly within the module itself. As a result, the electronic control is compromised, jeopardizing the proper functioning of the entire airbag system.
The cause is often a problem with the memory chips that store critical operating data or crash data. If this data becomes corrupted or the hardware fails, the control unit enters a safety mode. In this state, the fault is classified as permanent, blocking its deletion via standard diagnostic tools.
How can you recognize error B35?
The primary symptom of error B35 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument panel. Additionally, the fault memory cannot be cleared, even when using professional diagnostic equipment. This confirms that it is a permanent, internal defect within the control unit.

The most common causes of error code B35 are internal hardware defects, damaged memory chips, or persistent crash data remaining after an accident. Physical damage to the circuit board—such as microcracks caused by vibrations or defective solder joints—can also trigger this error.
A major contributing factor is hardware failure on the control board. Electronic components like processors or memory chips can degrade over time or suffer damage from external influences, leading to internal malfunctions that the system identifies as B35.
Following a collision, the airbag control unit stores so‑called crash data. These records lock the module for further use and must be professionally removed. Error B35 may signal that such data exists and cannot be erased.
Furthermore, poor connector contacts to the control unit or defects in connected components like seatbelt pretensioners can occasionally lead to internal misinterpretations. However, in most cases, the fault originates directly within the control unit’s electronics.
