What does error code B42 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code B42 indicates an internal, non‑recoverable fault in the airbag control unit (SRS module). It is a manufacturer‑specific diagnostic code that signals that the module’s hardware—due to defective components on the circuit board or aging processes—is no longer functioning correctly, prompting the airbag system to be deactivated for safety reasons.
Technically, the control unit’s self‑diagnostic system detects an internal inconsistency or hardware failure. This can result from faulty capacitors, resistors, integrated circuits (ICs), or even corrosion on the circuit board. In response, the control unit enters a safety mode, permanently stores error code B42, and disables the airbag functions to prevent unintended deployment.
This error is particularly common in older vehicle generations, such as the first‑generation Ford Focus (MK1). Typically, simply clearing the fault memory will not resolve the issue, as the underlying cause is a physical hardware defect.
How do you recognize error code B42?
The primary symptom of error code B42 is the airbag warning light remaining steadily illuminated in the instrument cluster. Additionally, while the error code can be read during diagnostics, it usually cannot be cleared with standard workshop scanners, indicating a permanent hardware failure. The entire restraint system is disabled.
The airbag indicator light (often depicted as a stylized figure of a passenger with an airbag) does not merely flash briefly upon starting the vehicle; instead, it stays lit continuously or begins blinking sporadically. This is the clearest sign for the driver that there is a problem within the SRS system.
As a result of the system being deactivated, neither the airbags nor the seatbelt pretensioners will function in the event of a crash. A vehicle displaying this active fault will fail the mandatory technical inspection (HU), as it constitutes a safety‑related defect.
What causes error code B42?
The most common cause of error code B42 is an internal hardware failure on the control unit’s circuit board. Defective electronic components, cold solder joints, or moisture damage are typical triggers. Additionally, improperly erased crash data following an accident can lock the control unit and generate this error.
Aging of electronic components is another major factor. Capacitors lose their capacitance, ICs may fail, and solder connections become brittle over time. Such material fatigue leads to implausible internal signals, which the microprocessor interprets as error code B42.
Stored crash data can also be a contributing factor. After a deployment event, the control unit often locks itself. If these data are not properly reset, the internal fault status persists.
Although B42 is a specific code, it may appear in the context of other internal control unit errors. Similar faults that likewise point to hardware issues include B1111 (control unit malfunction) or B0102–00 (ECU housing ground connection), both of which indicate deeper electronic problems.
Which vehicles are affected by B42?
Error code B42 occurs most frequently in older Ford models. In particular, the first generation of the Ford Focus is well known for this specific internal control unit fault. Airbag24 specializes in repairing this and similar control units.
