What does error code B48 mean?
Error code B48 indicates a specific hardware fault in the airbag system, related to the seat occupancy sensor (sensor B48) on the passenger seat. The airbag control unit can no longer reliably determine whether the seat is occupied, leading to deactivation of the passenger airbag and illumination of the SRS warning light.
Electronically speaking, the seat occupancy sensor is a device that communicates to the control unit—via a defined conductivity or specific resistance value—whether the passenger seat is occupied. This information is crucial for determining whether the passenger airbag should deploy in the event of a crash, particularly for proper operation of the child-seat detection system.
When error B48 occurs, the control unit registers an implausible reading—often reported as “resistance too low” or “short circuit to positive.” The cause is typically a physical defect, such as a broken cable or damage to the sensor film within the seat pad itself.
How do you recognize error B48?
The most obvious symptom of error B48 is the permanently illuminated airbag warning light (SRS lamp) in the instrument cluster. The system has detected a safety‑critical fault, classifies the situation as unsafe, and disables the passenger airbag as a protective measure.
The SRS warning light does not extinguish after starting the vehicle and remains constantly lit. This alerts the driver that part of the occupant protection system is malfunctioning and that a specialized workshop should be visited immediately.
During diagnostics at a workshop, it often becomes apparent that standard OBD2 scanners cannot read this specific error code. Accurate and definitive identification of error B48 requires manufacturer‑specific diagnostic equipment from providers such as Gutmann, Bosch, or the original test tool supplied by the vehicle manufacturer.
What causes error B48?
In the vast majority of cases, the primary cause of error code B48 is a hardware defect in the peripheral components of the airbag control unit. First and foremost are damages to the seat occupancy sensor or a broken cable in the wiring between the sensor and the control unit.
A defect in the seat occupancy sensor itself is the most common cause. Due to constant mechanical stress on the seat and aging processes, the delicate conductive traces inside the sensor may break, resulting in inaccurate resistance readings and triggering the error code.
Damaged cables and connectors beneath the passenger seat are also widespread. Frequent seat adjustments or objects trapped underneath can lead to cable breaks or corroded contacts at the connector, disrupting signal transmission.
Although less frequent, in isolated cases the airbag control unit itself may be at fault—due to internal defects triggered by undervoltage (weak battery, faulty alternator) or moisture damage. However, a thorough inspection of the peripherals (seat sensor and cables) should always be performed first.
In which models does error B48 occur?
Error code B48 is especially well‑known in connection with certain vehicle series, most notably the Porsche 911 of the 993 generation. Nevertheless, the underlying technical issue of faulty seat occupancy detection is a cross‑manufacturer phenomenon.
