What does error code C0198 mean in the airbag control unit?
Error code C0198 indicates a specific, internal fault within the airbag control unit. This code points to a hardware defect on the circuit board, caused by damaged electronic components, water damage, or overvoltage. The control unit recognizes this condition as critical and deactivates the airbag system.
Technically speaking, the control unit’s internal self-diagnosis has detected an anomaly that no longer ensures the safe operation of the system. This could involve defects in resistors, capacitors, or sensor connectors directly mounted on the circuit board.
The fault is typically permanent and cannot be resolved simply by clearing the fault memory, as the underlying physical cause persists. Therefore, component-level repair is essential to restore functionality.
How can you recognize error C0198?
The primary symptom of error C0198 is a continuously illuminated airbag warning light on the instrument cluster. Following a crash, the brake electronics may also remain locked until the crash data stored in the control unit is cleared. With this error, the airbag system is completely disabled.
The airbag warning light fails to turn off after starting the vehicle. This is a clear indication that the control unit has detected a serious internal fault and would not activate the occupant protection systems in the event of a collision.
Especially after an accident, the control unit may prevent the vehicle from being restarted by locking safety-critical systems such as the brake electronics. Only after professionally resetting the crash data will this lock be lifted, allowing the vehicle to return to full operational status.
What causes error code C0198?
The main causes of error code C0198 are physical damages to the control unit. These include internal defects in electronic components on the circuit board, corrosion due to water damage, or damage caused by overvoltage. Another common cause is stored crash data following an accident, which locks the control unit.
A frequent trigger is water damage. Penetrating moisture leads to corrosion and short circuits on the circuit board, damaging sensitive microelectronics and potentially causing this internal fault.
Overvoltages—such as those resulting from jump-starting with incorrect polarity or general issues in the vehicle’s electrical system—can also destroy the internal circuits of the airbag control unit and trigger error C0198.
After a crash, the device stores so‑called crash data. This data puts the control unit into a locked state that must be manually reset. Although technically not a defect, it is reported as an internal fault until the data is professionally erased.
Defective connectors or cables should also be checked as potential sources of failure. Movements, such as seat adjustments, can disrupt these connections, leading to unstable power supplies and secondary internal faults in the control unit.
